Following a year full of speculations and leaks, Overwatch 2 was announced back in November of 2019. The narrative expansion from the cinematic universe resulted in a story mode, as well as new heroes and maps. According to a tweet from PlayStation Brazil, the game will be released this year.

At BlizzCon 2019, Overwatch 2 was announced to be in early development, with no release date. Game director Jeff Kaplan said at the reveal panel when asked about the release “I have no idea, like, let’s just make it great, that’s what we care about more than anything. We don’t have a date in mind”.

PlayStation Brazil conducted an interview with chief writer Michael Chu and assistant director Aaron Keller, touching on a variety of subjects regarding the new title. When sharing the article to social media, PlayStarion Brazil wrote “2020 will be the year in which Overwatch 2 will arrive on the PS4, and to prepare ourselves, we spoke to some of its developers, who gave us some hot takes.”

In the interview, Blizzard reassured that Overwatch 2 does not bring the end of Overwatch, stating the develoment team had never intended to abandon the shooter side of the game in favor of the co-op version. "When creating Overwatch 2, we were always aware that we could not abandon our nearly 50 million players”. When asked if there would be synergy or cross-over between the PvE and PvP modes in overwatch 2, Aaron Keller said:

“Right now, the PvE and PvP progression are completely separate. We are trying to avoid that talents and abilities give unbalanced advantages in the PvP mode. [...] Our main objective is to create a robust progression system that works together with the Hero Missions, in which players can play and replay for hours, as the main game mode if they wish, after finishing the story mode in Overwatch 2.
