The latest gameplay footage for 'Gears of War: E-Day' was finally unveiled at the Xbox Game Showcase.
Unlike the previously released cinematic trailer, the video revealed at the start of the showcase features actual in-game footage. Spanning about seven minutes, the video is set before the events of the first game and begins with Marcus and Dominic—presumably still civilians at this point—scrambling to find weapons amidst the sudden chaos. Once armed, they fight their way through the Locust forces.
The footage showcases iconic series staples, such as the cover-based combat and the active reload system. It also highlights the heavy, visceral action fans expect from the franchise, including a scene where a character uses a Mark 1 Lancer—the early prototype of the 'Retro Lancer'—to perform a bayonet charge and impale a Locust.
The video reaches its climax as Marcus comes face-to-face with a Locust in a one-on-one encounter. After failing to land a fatal blow with his Mark 1 Lancer, Marcus is grabbed by the throat and pushed to the brink of death. As his consciousness fades, a new soldier arrives to save him, shredding the Locust with a chainsaw. The sight of the broken Mark 1 Lancer blade alongside the chainsaw seems to foreshadow the birth of the 'Chainsaw Lancer,' the definitive symbol of the Gears of War series.
'Gears of War: E-Day' is scheduled for release on October 6 as a Xbox console exclusive. Pre-orders for 'Gears of War: E-Day' are currently open, and those who pre-order will be granted early access to the open beta starting August 6.
