FlyQuest eliminated from LCS Mid-Season Showdown qualification after loss to Immortals

Source: Riot Games

After losing its most recent game of the 2021 League of Legends Championship Series Spring Split to Immortals, FlyQuest has been mathematically eliminated from qualifying for the LCS Mid-Season Showdown. At 5-10, FLY is in sole possession of 8th place with three games left to play in the split.

FlyQuest is the third LCS team to be eliminated from Mid-Season Showdown qualification. Golden Guardians was the first team to be eliminated after suffering its 11th loss of the Spring Split to Team Liquid last Friday, and Counter Logic Gaming was eliminated the next day after losing to FLY.

Heading into the last match day of week 5, FlyQuest was in a must-win situation to keep its Mid-Season Showdown hopes alive. Since FLY lost to IMT, its best possible finishing record in the Spring Split is 8-10. Hypothetically, FlyQuest could tie Evil Geniuses, the latter of whom is currently in 6th place, if EG lost its last three games and also finished at 8-10, but because FLY lost to EG in both meetings this spring, the head-to-head record would bar FLY from the post-season all the same.

It has been a disappointing split for FlyQuest thus far. The rookie duo of mid laner Cristian "Palafox" Palafox and support David "Diamond" Bérubé were expected to need some time to develop, but with top laner Eric "Licorice" Ritchie, jungler Brandon Joel "Josedeodo" Villegas and 2020 LCS Rookie of the Year Johnson "Johnsun" Nguyen as the squad's sharpshooter, a bottom 3 placing is certainly below the roster's expected level of play.

This doesn't mean that FlyQuest last three matches of spring against Golden Guardians, 100 Thieves, and Dignitas don't matter — every scratch in the win column counts now that the LCS Spring Split and LCS Summer Split have been combined for the 2021 season.
