[Guide] What is Elusive in Legends of Runeterra?

There are many cards in Legends of Runeterra, and each have their own stats and effects to make them unique. It can be overwhelming, especially if you’re new to the card game genre, to learn all these effects. That’s why we’re dissecting all the keywords in a series of guides. In this one we’re taking a look at Elusive.

Elusive is one of the most powerful keywords in combat. Normally, when you line up your attackers, your opponent can place their units in front of the attackers to block incoming damage. But cards with Elusive can only be blocked by other Elusive cards. Elusive units have a very high chance of landing a blow on the Nexus. Important to note is that while Elusive units can only be blocked by other Elusive cards, they themselves can block any incoming damage.

If your opponent has an Elusive unit but you don’t, no need to worry: Elusive units can still be targeted by spells. Another way to get rid of your opponent’s Elusive unit is by mounting so much pressure on the board that they’re forced to block the incoming damage. Some examples of cards with Elusive can be found below.

From Piltover and Zaun, the Daring Poro comes flying in. It’s the simplest Elusive card, but as said before, the keyword is a powerful one. In an aggressive deck that aims to buff its smaller units, also known as a ‘token deck’, Daring Poro can grow from a cute ball of fluff into a serious damage dealer.

Windfarer Hatchling costs a lot for a unit with just four attack power and two health. But it’s effect is all the more powerful: whenever Windfarer Hatchling is summoned, all other allies receive a +2/+2 bonus for the remainder of the round. Effectively, when you have one other unit on the board, Windfarer is a 6/4, which still isn’t fantastic. But 8/6 worth of stats, including a 4/2 Elusive unit for seven mana? That’s more like it.

In case you have a powerful unit on the board and want to make sure they stay unscathed for one round more, or if you need to block incoming Elusive damage, the Ionian spell Ghost is the cheapest and most effective option. For merely one mana you turn any ally into an Elusive for the rest of the round. It’s a Burst spell, so your opponent cannot block its effect either.
