The Disgaea series, which has become Nippon Ichi Software's flagship franchise, is a truly unique beast. Even though its core systems are incredibly well-defined and expansive, the way they manifest in-game often devolves into a wild, unpredictable, and chaotic mess.

This uniquely delightful sensibility has been perfectly captured in this dice-based board game. Typically, board games in this genre fall into one of two clear categories: cooperation or competition. 'Prinny Board Battle' shakes up those rules to create something entirely its own.

The basic rules are simple: defeat the boss that appears on the board, then carry it back to the starting point. The entire process is played out as a board game where you roll dice to move.

Early bosses are far too tough to take on alone. This forces the maximum of four players to 'cooperate' to bring the boss down. However, once the boss is defeated, the player who carries it back to the start wins. That is when the 'betrayal' begins.

This core mechanic is implemented in a way that maximizes the characteristics of the Disgaea series. First, there aren't many types of spaces on the board. Most are spaces that increase or decrease your stats. Others allow you to build structures or spawn enemies when you land on them, while the rest are mostly random events.

As the mention of stats suggests, the game incorporates RPG elements, forcing you to think about how quickly and in what direction you should develop your character before facing the boss. The stats themselves—Attack, Magic, HP, etc.—are familiar to anyone who has played the Disgaea series. The catch, however, is that these stat increases are determined randomly via slots, which fits the dice-battle format.

Since there are plenty of stat-boosting spaces, the early game is all about moving quickly to these spots to power up. While other spaces might seem less effective at first, you eventually realize that you need to look beyond just stacking stats and find more diverse ways to grow stronger.

The key lies in buildings. Weapon/Armor shops, general stores, and enhancement buildings serve as basic shops where you can use the money you've earned to buy items or perform simple upgrades. In particular, you can use the Disgaea series' signature 'throwing' mechanic to stack buildings, which steadily increases their rank.

Furthermore, purchasing items from the general store—which doesn't offer direct upgrades—can drastically change the course of the game. This is because players can utilize their turns in quite a variety of ways..

In this game, a turn ends after you roll the dice and move your piece to another space. This is the 'progression' phase. However, you can perform various other actions within a single turn. You can attack enemies, use job-specific skills, use items, or perform a throw. While you might sometimes just roll the dice and move if you have nothing else to do, you can also choose to attack nearby enemies, steal items, throw objects, and then roll the dice to continue your turn.

Items can also be used to influence your movement. Using an item allows you to move a specific number of spaces, and this is treated as an 'item use' action rather than a standard 'progression' move. In other words, if there is a powerful stat-boosting space four tiles ahead, you can use an item to move exactly four spaces, gain the stat boost, and then still perform your standard dice-roll move afterward.

This utilization of turns is a key factor that significantly boosts the game's strategic depth. The more extra actions you can perform in a single turn, the further ahead you can get compared to other players.

Along with items, 'throwing' is a crucial part of the game's strategy. Beyond stacking buildings, you can throw other players and even enemies. While the main purpose of throwing is to stack buildings, once the competition heats up in the late game, you can use it to toss opponents away from high-value areas or even throw them near a boss to get them killed.

And, as always, Prinnies explode when thrown. In 'Prinny Board Battle,' players choose from characters like Prinnies, Warriors, Mages, Archers, and Thieves, while iconic series characters appear as enemies, such as the Four Heavenly Kings. Among the playable characters, the Prinny definitely feels like the hardest to play because it explodes. The developers even intended for the Prinny to be a character for advanced players.

In any case, between the exploding Prinnies and the throwing mechanic, the game is designed to create various variables within a single turn. Each character also has different skills and attack methods. While basic attacks rely on a roulette to determine damage, magic can deal high damage without that randomness—though it costs MP, which you must manage. Archers can attack from a distance, and so on. Trying to account for these variables while predicting the moves of other players can make your head spin.

Another feature is the Assembly system. Usually, a large portion of the money you earn during play is taken away as 'taxes.' However, if you enter the Assembly building, you can use that confiscated money to propose bills. These bills can change the current direction of the game.

These can range from minor changes, like granting an extra move, to more significant ones like increasing damage, movement range, or item grades in shops. You can even change the rules in ways impossible in typical board games, such as slowing down the slot rotation speed or changing the turn order. Of course, this only happens if the bill is passed by the Assembly.

Whether you want to play aggressively or focus on buffing yourself, it all comes down to your choices. You can cooperate while still competing, and you can further enhance your advantages even while in the middle of a rivalry. This playstyle, where there are no permanent enemies or allies, makes the game truly special.

Even though my demo was against the CPU, I was quite surprised by the sudden attacks and betrayals. Thinking about how these betrayals will come from real players in multiplayer already has me burning with a desire for revenge. The demo version only featured relatively small stages, but the full game will include a wider variety of boards, which should lead to even more diverse situations.

Prinny Board Battle' is scheduled for release on November 12 for Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PS5, and PC.
