Nearly two months after the launch of the most recent Legends of Runeterra expansion, Empires of the Ascended, the game's development has revealed what's coming next. Announced on the game's official social media accounts, Guardians of the Ancient is a 42-card expansion that will bring three new champions to Riot Games' entry into the collectible card game genre.

In a brief video within the announcement, players listen to Zilean discuss the importance of decisions, the dangers that lie ahead, and how, sometimes, there are ways to change the future.

Although it has yet to be confirmed if all of the champions shown within the video will be entering the title, Zilean, Irelia and Malphite all make an appearance at one point or another. None of the three are in the game currently but with Zilean potentially in the mix the design team could introduce a mechanic that involves manipulating past turns or future events.

Riot Games provided two cards to InvenGlobal prior to the announcement that gives players a slight indication of what may be around the corner:

Towards the end of the video, the development team mentions a May 5 release date so players will not have to wait long for cards to begin being teased.
