A24's horror film 'Backrooms' has shattered the studio's all-time opening record upon its release.

'Backrooms' grossed approximately $81.4 million in its opening weekend in North America starting May 29, with a global cumulative total of $118 million. This figure is more than triple the previous A24 record of $25.5 million, set by Alex Garland's 2024 film 'Civil War.' It climbed to the top of the box office, surpassing 'The Mandalorian & Grogu' in its second week of release.

The film's strong performance was evident even before its official debut. 'Backrooms' set a new A24 preview record by grossing $10.4 million on Thursday alone. This figure exceeds the preview earnings of 'Scream 7,' 'The Conjuring: Last Rites,' '28 Years Later,' and 'Final Destination: Bloodlines,' and is on par with the $10.5 million earned by 'It Chapter Two.' Essentially, the film recouped its production budget of around $10 million in just one day.

The film is also performing well in the domestic market, drawing 110k viewers as of the 31st and surpassing 300k total admissions since its release on the 27th.

The movie follows a protagonist who, while running a furniture store, is pulled into an endless space beyond the showroom. It is based on the internet creepypasta of the same name. The 'Backrooms' urban legend, which originated in online communities, gained significant attention in 2022 when Kane Pixels adapted it into a found-footage series. The IP has since expanded, with various game adaptations released as well.

Kane Parsons, the creator behind Kane Pixels—who expanded the universe through numerous YouTube shorts—directed the film himself. Born in 2005, Parsons has now set a new record as the youngest feature film director in A24 history, while also achieving the studio's biggest opening weekend.
