Riot Games Launches Major ARAM: Arena Update for League of Legends

Riot Games has released a substantial update for League of Legends, expanding the scope of its limited-time mode known as ARAM: Arena. The update went live on Feb. 5 in South Korea, according to the developer, and follows sustained player engagement since the mode’s debut late last year.

ARAM: Arena builds on the long-running Howling Abyss format by layering in Augments—special modifiers that alter champion abilities and playstyles. Since launching in October, the mode has drawn enough participation to prompt Riot to extend its availability beyond the original schedule, a move that set the stage for the current overhaul.

The update introduces more than 40 new Augments designed to increase variety and unpredictability in matches. Among them are effects that charm opposing champions or temporarily transform players into the Poroking, enabling high-mobility engagements. Riot says the additions are intended to broaden viable strategies while leaning into the chaotic tone that has defined the mode.

A new progression track has also been added, allowing players to unlock augments, emotes, icons, and cosmetic effects simply by playing. Some rewards modify in-game elements such as the question mark ping, providing visual feedback tied to progression rather than competitive rank.

Riot has also introduced an augment-combination system inspired by mechanics seen in Teamfight Tactics. Certain augments can now interact when equipped together, unlocking conditional bonuses. One example highlighted by the studio increases movement speed and healing when specific criteria are met, adding another layer of decision-making before matches begin.

Ezra Lynn, a game designer at Riot Games, said the update reflects the response the mode has received globally. “Thanks to strong player support, we’re extending the service and delivering a major update,” Lynn said, adding that the new augments and systems are meant to give players more reasons to experiment.

The update aligns with Riot’s broader approach to rotating modes, which often serve as testing grounds for new mechanics without permanently altering the core game. Patch notes detailing the changes are available on Riot Games’ official website, along with key visuals and additional materials related to ARAM: Arena.

League of Legends, now in its 17th year, remains one of the most-played PC games worldwide, and Riot continues to support it through a mix of competitive updates and experimental modes aimed at long-term engagement.
