Chess.com and Jagex have announced a limited-time crossover that brings characters from Old School RuneScape to the online chess platform. Throughout November, players can challenge five themed bots modeled after familiar faces from the fantasy world of Gielinor.
The collaboration marks a rare partnership between a massively multiplayer online role-playing game and a competitive strategy platform. Each bot features a distinct personality and difficulty rating, giving both newcomers and seasoned chess players a range of challenges.
The lineup includes the quarrelsome goblin generals Bentnoze and Wartface, rated at 300, offering an entry-level encounter for beginners. Vannaka, an early-game Slayer Master in Old School RuneScape, is represented with a 650 rating aimed at intermediate players looking to sharpen their tactics. Bob the Cat — a recurring, enigmatic character within RuneScape’s lore — appears as a 1350-rated challenger. More experienced players can face Sliske, a Mahjarrat known for trickery and mind games, at 1800. The toughest opponent in the event is the Wise Old Man, a long-time fan-favorite NPC, presented here as a 3150-rated bot targeted at high-level competitors.
Chess.com and Old School RuneScape Unite in Epic Crossover Event
According to the announcement, each bot is designed to reflect its character’s in-game persona and reputation. Chess.com users can access the event through the “Play Bots” section of the platform, where the themed matches are available for a limited period.
The crossover continues a trend of gaming-focused promotional events on Chess.com, where special bots featuring cultural icons, fictional characters, and esports personalities have helped broaden the platform’s audience beyond traditional chess fans.
For Jagex, the event offers a fresh way to engage Old School RuneScape players outside its core MMO environment. The title — first released in 2013 as a recreation of the 2007 version of RuneScape — maintains a strong community across PC and mobile platforms. It supports cross-platform progression on PC, Steam, iOS, and Android, allowing players to pick up their adventure from any device. Players interested in taking on the Gielinor-themed chess challenges can do so now through Chess.com for the duration of the event.
