11 bit studios, a leading global game publisher based in Poland, announced the official release of 'Last Variable,' a new narrative expansion for its critically acclaimed mystery sci-fi adventure game 'The Alters.' The expansion is now available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.

'The Alters: Last Variable' is a massive expansion offering approximately 20 hours of gameplay, picking up after the events of the main game's ending. Set in 'Oasis,' the only paradise on a desolate alien planet where everyone else has departed, the story follows Jan Scientist and his clones, the Alters, as they embark on a new journey to complete life-altering research.

Since Jan cannot unlock the secrets of Oasis alone, he creates 'Alters'—alternative versions of himself such as geologists, biologists, and physicists—to form a research team. To complete the research, players must cooperate with and support numerous 'other selves,' each with distinct personalities and choices; these interactions form the core of the expansion's gameplay and narrative.

Alongside the new story, the in-game systems have been significantly expanded. Players can explore new regions, terraform the landscape, and secure resources from changing terrain, all while contending with enhanced planetary defense mechanisms and various threats, such as earthquakes and radiation leaks.

Players can also expand their underground base to suit soil conditions and research new modules like the 'Cryosleep Chamber' to extend survival time. In extreme environments, players can construct Field Labs to assign various research tasks to Alters in cryosleep. This creates a deeper, science-based survival experience where resource management, research and development, and survival strategies are organically intertwined.

Notably, the Alters age and experience life changes as they endure harsh environments without cryosleep protection. When the player wakes them up, they will see the long-term effects of their past scientific choices and the changes brought about by the passage of time.

During cooling periods, when the planet's heat temporarily subsides, players can explore the dramatically altered surface to develop new technologies. Additionally, by constructing Field Labs, players can instruct the Alters to continue research tasks even after the player enters cryosleep.
