EA Sports suspends Marco van Basten from FIFA 20 after on-air white supremacist remark

EA Sports has indefinitely suspened content of Dutch football player Marco van Basten in FIFA 20. The legendary striker and coach became the center of controversy in the football world last week. During a Dutch television show he could be heard saying 'Sieg Heil', a salute tied to Nazism meaning 'Hail victory', after a pre-match interview with German football coach Frank Wormuth.

Players who log in to FIFA 20 are met with a message from the FIFA developers, reading: "We are aware of the recent comments made by Marco van Basten. We have an expectation that our commitment to equality and diversity is upheld across our game. As such, we will suspend Marco van Basten ICON items from being available in Packs, SBCs and FUT Draft until further notice." Those who already have Van Basten content in the game still are able to use it like any other player's content.

Van Basten apologized shortly after the incident, stating that it was meant as a joke commenting on the interviewer's clumsy communication with the German interviewee. FOX Sports, whose show the comments were made on, stated that while Van Basten had no idea that his microphone was on, the supposed joke had no place in the studio no matter what. The channel suspended Van Basten from their shows for a week.
