[Guide] What is Fearsome in Legends of Runeterra?

There are many cards in Legends of Runeterra, and each have their own stats and effects to make them unique. It can be overwhelming, especially if you’re new to the card game genre, to learn all these effects. That’s why we’re dissecting all the keywords in a series of guides. In this one we’re taking a look at Fearsome.

Fearsome is a keyword especially good in the early game. Cards that are Fearsome can only be blocked by enemies that have three attack or more—all units with two or less attack are simply too scared to defend against Fearsome opponents. Fearsome can be used to manipulate your opponent’s blocking strategy, and gives you tools to steer the battle in the direction you want. Fearsome has great synergy with the Frostbite effect, as it reduces an enemy’s attack to zero for the rest of the round.

If your opponent is attacking with a unit that has two or less attack power and you put a Fearsome card in front of it to block, attacks will be carried out as usual. It’s only when you’re on the offense that Fearsome’s effect is activated. We’ve listed a few examples of cards with Fearsome below.

It’s hard to believe, but there is indeed a poro that’s Fearsome: Sinister Poro. The Shadow Isles card is the most basic Fearsome card there is, with just one attack power and one health for one mana. Like most poros, the Sinister Poro finds it best fit in aggressive decks that try to establish board control early on, and snowball the game from there.

A considerably flashier Fearsome card is Commander Ledros, also from the Shadow Isles. Eight mana is a lot to spend on just one card, but the effect is powerful: Commander Ledros deals up to ten damage directly to the enemy Nexus. He keeps on cutting with his Last breath ability, which returns him to your hand. With Fearsome Commander Ledros demands one of the opponent’s stronger units to block him, otherwise threatening an often lethal blow.

The Fearsome effect is found outside of the Shadow Isles as well. When you’re on the offense and drag Cithria the Bold, a Demacian card, onto the battlefield, all other allies receive a big buff. Not only do they all get Fearsome, denying any opponent with two attack or less from blocking your allies. Furthermore, they increase in power, and grow with one attack power and one health until the end of the round.
