Japanese publisher CTW has launched Scimagic: The Magic World Is Bugged, Fix It With Science!, a free-to-play roguelike role-playing game (RPG) set in an isekai world. The game is out worldwide today, October 23rd, on CTW's G123 platform.

According to a release, players take the role of a young boy who uses his knowledge of science to turn a world of magic upside down. CTW calls it a ‘Science × Magic’ adventure. No download is needed: Scimagic plays in the browser on PC and mobile.

Isekai is a popular anime and light novel genre in which the hero is transported to (or reborn in) another world. Roguelikes are built around repeated attempts, known as runs. Each one plays out differently.

Science-powered magic and historical allies

New choices appear in battle as players progress. They combine elements such as fire, water, electricity and wind to evolve their magic into stronger forms; the release says the picks shape each player's fighting style, so no two runs feel the same.

The cast leans on famous scientists. Newton, Einstein, Archimedes, Leibniz, Heisenberg and Maxwell have all been reimagined as original characters made for the game, each tied to a discovery (Archimedes to buoyancy, Heisenberg to the uncertainty principle). To mark the launch, every new player gets Helia Archimedes for free.

Outside battle, players collect gear, level up their characters and take on a range of stages. Clearing stages moves the main story forward. Character conversations and small events fill in the world along the way.

Scimagic is free to play with optional in-game purchases. G123 is CTW's browser game platform, where many releases are anime adaptations; recent entries include Shakugan no Shana: Blaze Edge, WIXOSS Multiverse, The Apothecary Diaries Palace Chronicles and Kakegurui ALL IN.
