Czech studio MADFINGER Games has released Rogue Ops, the fourth major update for its open-world tactical shooter Gray Zone Warfare, on PC via Steam. The free update moves the game from pre-alpha to alpha.

According to a release, Rogue Ops went live on October 22nd. It adds a new gameplay loop built around a personal base and high-risk smuggling runs. Gray Zone Warfare has been in Early Access (where players buy a game while it is still being built) since April 2024; the studio said it has sold more than 1.7 million copies. To mark the update, the game is 35% off on Steam until November 5th.

What Rogue Ops adds

The centerpiece is the Hideout, a personal base of operations. There, players can make medical supplies, produce illegal substances, process sensitive military technology and craft specialized equipment. Goods can be sold straight to vendors. Or players can risk carrying the contraband across Lamang, the game's fictional setting, for ‘substantially greater rewards’, according to the release.

Two new activities, Smuggling and Hunting, build on that choice. Smugglers have to deliver cargo to set locations while rival mercenaries try to grab the shipment for themselves. Both also work in PvE (player versus environment).

Lamang itself gets bigger. The update adds three high-difficulty locations (an abandoned psychiatric institution, a military research facility and a radio observatory) plus more than 15 smaller spots. Players can also find seven new firearms, hundreds of weapon parts and extra gear.

Multiple playable characters arrive as well. So does the game's first soft wipe, which resets equipment and currency but keeps player progression.

Under the hood, MADFINGER Games has reworked NPC behavior, animations, audio, combat and the health system. The game now runs on Unreal Engine 5.7, which the studio said brings more performance gains. Anti-cheat measures were tightened, too.

“Rogue Ops represents a major milestone for Gray Zone Warfare and an important step toward realizing our vision for the game,” said Marek Rabas, CEO and Creative Director at MADFINGER Games. Rabas added that earlier updates focused on the game's foundations; the new loop, he said, gives players more freedom and new ways to progress.

“The Hideout and its associated activities are just the beginning of what we have planned as players move closer to Ground Zero,” Rabas said. Ground Zero is the core mystery at the center of the game.

A Twitch Drops campaign runs from October 22nd to November 6th, offering cosmetic rewards and in-game supplies. Twitch Drops are items viewers unlock by watching participating streams.

MADFINGER Games is an independent studio based in Brno, Czech Republic. It was founded in 2010. Gray Zone Warfare, built on Unreal Engine 5, is its current project and remains in Early Access on PC.
