Arc System Works has released DEMONS' NIGHT FEVER, a stat-raising strategy role-playing game (SRPG) from Disgaea creator Sohei Niikawa, on PlayStation 5 (PS5), Nintendo Switch and Steam today, October 22nd.

According to a release, the game costs €39.99. It is single-player only, with offline play. Text is available in English, French, Korean, Japanese and both Traditional and Simplified Chinese, while voices come in English and Japanese. Drecom developed the game; Arc System Works publishes it, and more details are on the official DEMONS' NIGHT FEVER site.

Strategy RPGs (sometimes called tactics RPGs) mix turn-based battles on a map with long-term character growth. Disgaea is one of the genre's best-known series.

Playing as the villain

Here, players are the bad guys. The release pitches ‘an unconventional strategic battle’ where enemies and allies are both fair game. Its Peon Exploitation System lets players sacrifice their own allied Peons mid-fight; Kill Skills and Sacrifices, which detonate underlings by the player's own hand, are billed as ‘the shortest route to victory’.

Misdeeds earn Perverse Points. Those go into building an evil army, while Abductions and Pillaging (done against a time limit) push characters to their limits. Each time a chapter boss falls, the setting changes completely: in one chapter players fight Super Rangers as a monster, in another they crush Magical Girls as a witch.

Deluxe Edition and the team behind it

Physical copies are available on PS5 and Switch. A Deluxe Edition, limited to 500 copies and bundled with the original soundtrack, is exclusive to Red Art Games. Deliveries are scheduled for December 3rd.

“I am proud to say that we have delivered a truly one-of-a-kind gaming experience and made our mark on the history of SRPGs,” said Sohei Niikawa (also credited as Roman Kitayama), the game's producer, original concept creator and scenario writer.

Character designer Yuji Himukai called it ‘a delightfully strange game’, one players can enjoy ‘without any pangs of conscience’. Composer Tatsuya Yano said he wrote ‘a wide variety of tracks to fit its dark yet comical world’. The theme song, Dropout, is by syudou.

Arc System Works, founded in 1988, is a Japanese developer and publisher known for the GUILTY GEAR and BLAZBLUE series. It opened a European subsidiary in Paris on July 1st 2024. Red Art Games is a France-based publisher of indie, Japanese and retro games; the company says it has released more than 300 physical editions and ported over 30 games.
