Everyone has different criteria when choosing a gaming laptop. Some prioritize performance above all else, while others value daily portability and battery life. When you start factoring in screen size, display quality, storage, and the keyboard, you inevitably reach a point where you have to make a compromise.
Yet it is human nature to want it all. You want top-tier performance, an excellent display, and a keyboard that feels right. You want generous storage and prefer not to turn down graphics settings in the latest games. As you add requirement after requirement, you suddenly find yourself searching for a machine that excels at everything.
The 'HyperX OMEN MAX 16' answers those uncompromising demands right from its name. It packs an Intel Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus, a GeForce RTX 5080 Laptop GPU with 16GB VRAM, a 240Hz OLED display, and an upgraded cooling system. Unsurprisingly, its price exceeds 6.5 million won. It is by no means an impulse buy, but for those unwilling to compromise on performance, display quality, or user experience, it presents a compelling setup.

Flagship-Level Bulk and Build Size Scaled to 'MAX' for Maximum Performance
Although the HyperX OMEN MAX 16 is a 16-inch laptop, it is by no means compact or light. It measures 356.5×269mm, with a thickness ranging from approximately 26.1mm at the front to 28.7mm at the rear, and weighs about 2.97kg. Considering that the previously reviewed OMEN 16 weighed in the 2.4kg range, this model sits in a weight class closer to a 17-inch gaming laptop.
In return, the extra footprint is put to good use housing high-performance components and cooling. The keyboard uses a full-size layout complete with a numpad, while I/O ports for external peripherals are arranged along the sides and rear.
The port selection lives up to its flagship billing as well. It features two Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports supporting 40Gbps transfer speeds, two 10Gbps USB-A ports, an HDMI 2.1 output, a wired LAN port, and a headphone/microphone combo jack. Power Delivery and external display output via USB-C are also supported. For anyone who found the lack of high-speed USB-C ports on the previous OMEN 16 disappointing, expansion options here show virtually no compromises.
Matching its size, the power brick is also substantial. The bundled adapter boasts a maximum output of 460W. Carrying it around in a bag every day alongside the laptop is a heavy ask, but considering the CPU and GPU configuration detailed below, it clearly highlights the machine's intended direction.

The RTX 5080 and Core Ultra 9 Pairing Flagship Muscle Befitting a Top-End Gaming Laptop
The CPU inside the HyperX OMEN MAX 16 (16-ah1054TX) is the Intel Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus. Featuring a 24-core, 24-thread architecture combining 8 P-cores and 16 E-cores, it reaches boost clocks of up to 5.5GHz. It is paired with an Intel AI Boost NPU delivering 13 TOPS of performance.
Handling graphics duties is the GeForce RTX 5080 Laptop GPU. Equipped with 16GB of GDDR7 memory, its VRAM capacity is double the 8GB found on the RTX 5070-based OMEN model examined earlier. Given the laptop's goal of running games at 2560×1600 resolution with high-resolution textures and heavy ray tracing, this is a welcome spec.
System memory consists of 32GB DDR5 split across two 16GB modules, while storage comes standard with a 1TB NVMe SSD. The operating system comes pre-installed with Windows 11 Pro.

The Difference a 240Hz OLED Makes 0.2ms Display Meets the HyperAction Keyboard
The display also lives up to the 'MAX' moniker. The 16-inch OLED panel features a 16:10 aspect ratio with 2560×1600 resolution, up to a 240Hz refresh rate, and a rapid 0.2ms response time. Color coverage covers 100% of DCI-P3, with brightness reaching up to 500 nits in SDR and up to 1,100 nits in HDR content.
The previously reviewed OMEN 16 also offered 2560×1600 resolution and 240Hz, but utilized an IPS panel. While the resolution and refresh rate specs match the earlier OMEN 16 on paper, looking at the screen in person tells a completely different story. Thanks to OLED's deep blacks and high contrast ratio, the visual difference is particularly striking in dark, shadowy games.
The keyboard incorporates HyperAction technology. Supporting a 1,000Hz polling rate to scan key inputs 1,000 times per second, it features a full-size layout with a numpad and per-key RGB lighting. While it does not push extreme figures like the 8,000Hz keyboard on the recently released Valorant Edition, it offers a well-rounded setup that works comfortably for both everyday gaming and productivity.

Cooling Is as Crucial as Performance OMEN Tempest Cooling Pro and OMEN Gaming Hub
Stuffing a Core Ultra 9 and RTX 5080 into a 16-inch chassis makes cooling a standout feature of this device. To handle the heat, the HyperX OMEN MAX 16 incorporates 'OMEN Tempest Cooling Pro.' HP explains that it enlarged internal clearances to facilitate airflow, combining a vapor chamber and heat pipes to exhaust heat from the CPU and GPU to the outside.
For thermal interface material, it uses 'OMEN Cryo Compound,' which combines liquid metal with silicone to increase viscosity. It also features 'Fan Cleaner,' a technology that reverses fan rotation to push internal dust out. Fan Cleaner can be run manually or scheduled via the OMEN Gaming Hub.

Another interesting feature is 'Fan Cleaner.' On the Intel-based HyperX OMEN MAX 16, this self-cleaning function reverses fan spin after gaming sessions end to blow out accumulated dust inside. It does not run during gameplay and can be manually triggered or scheduled through the OMEN Gaming Hub.
The familiar OMEN Gaming Hub from previous OMEN machines is naturally included. Users can monitor CPU and GPU status in real time and manage key settings—such as performance modes, fans, and lighting—from a single dashboard. For those seeking peak performance, Unleashed Mode is available; HP notes that Intel-based OMEN MAX 16 models are engineered to draw up to 300W of total platform power in this mode.
OMEN AI is also supported. This feature analyzes running games and system status, adjusting various settings with the goal of boosting frame rates—focusing on eliminating the hassle of tweaking individual graphic options line by line.

How Far Can the RTX 5080 Go? Testing Recent Games Firsthand at 2.5K
Benchmark scores alone cannot tell the full story of gaming performance. In this test, actual gameplay was evaluated at the laptop's native 2560×1600 resolution to measure frame rates and sustained performance over extended sessions. Testing was conducted with OMEN Gaming Hub set to 'Unleashed' mode.

Overall, the true capability of the RTX 5080 was fully evident even at 2560×1600 resolution. 'The Witcher 3' with ray tracing and frame generation enabled maintained roughly 90–110 FPS, while 'Ace Combat 8,' known for its heavy optimization load, averaged in the 90 FPS range. 'Crimson Desert' also held around 100 FPS with ray tracing active, and 'Cyberpunk 2077' averaged 82 FPS on the Ray Tracing Ultra preset benchmark. It was undeniably clear that recent games can be enjoyed at 2.5K without making significant graphic compromises.
Truly Worthy of the MAX Name HyperX OMEN MAX 16
The HyperX OMEN MAX 16 takes a different route from gaming laptops that settle for a moderate compromise. Starting with the Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus and RTX 5080 16GB, it packs every element required to push performance to the limit—including a 240Hz OLED display, an enhanced cooling solution, and a 460W power adapter. On the flip side, fan noise becomes substantial when pushing the hardware to its max. If you can tolerate that, it delivers performance capable of driving demanding modern AAA titles with practically zero graphical compromise.
Naturally, the trade-offs are equally clear. Weighing roughly 3kg for the laptop alone—along with a massive power adapter—it is far from the portability expected of a typical 16-inch notebook. The price tag, hovering around 6.5 million won, is also far from accessible. Ultimately, the HyperX OMEN MAX 16 is designed not for those prioritizing lightweight mobility or bang-for-the-buck value, but for users who want the highest possible gaming performance in a transportable form factor.
