The 'Akina Urban Legend Research Institute' is a magician clan disguised as Okuma High School's film club, 'Slash and Flesh'. Their primary activity is urban legend hunting—collecting and analyzing rumors of ghost stories roaming the city to uncover their true nature—and they have made Shinjuku Ward their hideout.

The director, 'Akina Akitsu,' is a magician who uses magic tools created with her proprietary technology that combines alchemy with chemistry for her urban legend hunting. However, among the tools crafted with her unique methods, she rarely manages to create something useful.

Clan member 'Haru Kagamihara' is a delicate and pure young lady like a lovely flower among her friends, but inside the clubroom, she leads a double life as a magician who lounges on the sofa enjoying B-grade slasher movies. Her favorite is a minor series called 'Shinjuku Cleaver Incident,' and she shapes her summons to look like the slasher from the films.

The third member, 'Mai Asakura,' is the ace of the track and field team aiming for Inter-High. Although she is originally a magician, rather than living as one, she has resolved to live as an ordinary civilian and pours more effort into her track team activities. Quiet and taciturn, she projects an aloof image that makes her seem hard to approach, but she is an ordinary girl who loves cute plushies—though she occasionally shows a strange lack of common sense, such as attending classes or walking around bustling commercial districts in her tracksuit.
