The actual in-game appearance of units from the Adeptus Mechanicus—or the 'Machine Cult'—has been revealed as the fourth playable faction in 'Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War 4' (hereinafter 'Dawn of War 4'), the fourth installment in the series.
Initially, only three playable factions were announced for 'Dawn of War 4': the Space Marines (Adeptus Astartes), the Orks, and the Necrons. Given the promise of four factions, many speculated that the Aeldari (Eldar), a series staple, would be the most likely final addition.
However, the announcement of the Adeptus Mechanicus in April confirmed that the Aeldari would be excluded from the launch roster, and on May 8, actual gameplay footage and unit designs for the Adeptus Mechanicus were finally unveiled.
The Adeptus Mechanicus is the faction that holds a monopoly on technology within the Imperium of Man, the most powerful force in the setting. They possess a unique religious character, worshipping the 'Machine Spirit' they believe dwells within machinery, treating maintenance as an act of devotion to a deity, and regarding technical blueprints as sacred scripture.
According to the developers, the Adeptus Mechanicus focuses on powerful ranged synergies. Their unique mechanics include 'Void Shields' that block enemy ranged attacks and the 'Noosphere Network,' which provides bonuses based on the number of buildings constructed.
The footage showcases various Adeptus Mechanicus units implemented in 'DoW4,' including the 'Kastelan Robot' (often affectionately called 'Onggi-bot' by Korean fans), the 'Skorpius' hovercraft, 'Kataphron Battle Servitors,' and 'Tech-Priests.
Meanwhile, developer King Art Games explained the inclusion of the Adeptus Mechanicus by stating, "We wanted to add a faction that has never been playable in the game series before." 'Dawn of War 4' is scheduled for release in 2026.
