Amazon’s ambitious MMORPG project—and a title that rode early global success to a strong start—New World: Aeternum (hereafter New World) has ultimately announced that it will be shutting down.
Amazon Games shared an update on New World’s future via its official website on the 15th (local time). Service will end on January 31, 2027 across all platforms. In addition, purchases of the game’s in-game currency will be discontinued starting July 20, and refunds will also no longer be available.
This wind-down was foreshadowed in October of last year, in the game’s fourth-anniversary announcement. At the time, Amazon said that Season 10 content and the Nighthaven update would be New World’s final content release. That fueled expectations that the game would begin the process of ending service—and in the end, service will indeed conclude in 2027.
Alongside the shutdown announcement, new purchases of the game have also been halted across all platforms, including PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
Released on PC in 2021, New World got off to a strong start, surpassing 910,000 concurrent players at launch. It was also praised for demonstrating that global demand for MMORPGs still existed. However, two months after release, daily peak concurrency fell to under 150,000 in December. Player counts did rise around major updates thereafter, but the game failed to sustain its early momentum.
Compounding this, Amazon’s large-scale restructuring led Amazon Games to carry out workforce reductions on the scale of 14,000 people and announce the cancellation of its AAA MMORPG project. Despite the significant investment behind New World, it was unable to weather the impact of the restructuring—ultimately leading to the end of updates and, now, the shutdown of service.
The developers left a message of thanks, saying they were grateful to players for making this game something special.
