[LCK] AF Fly: "It’s definitely harder for the teams to play around the mage champions in the current meta."

In the first match of day 2 of the 2021 LCK Summer split, Afreeca Freecs managed to defeat Fredit BRION 2-1. Despite their rocky start in game 1, AF managed to close out the series in their first offline match of the split at LoL Park.

The mid laner for AF, Song “Fly” Yong-jun, joined the press room at LoL Park for a post-victory interview.

THoughts on the victory?

It’s been way too long since we played at LoL Park, so I really didn’t want to lose tonight.

Due to the team’s poor performance in Spring, a lot must’ve been on your mind coming into the Summer split. Has your mentality changed at all while preparing for Summer?

I wanted to enjoy playing this split. It really didn’t feel like I enjoyed playing due to the losses in the last split; I got trapped in my own thoughts, so I hope to break free through wins..

In game 2, despite BRION having Infernal soul, AF took the win. Tell us what happened.

We were slow in group timings, but in terms of teamfights and scaling, we felt like we were way ahead of them.

One of AF’s biggest weaknesses from Spring was the poor macro after 25 minutes.

I think that with the meta change and with Cain joining, I think that we’ve overcome that weakness. Obviously, we’ll have to prove that we’ve fixed our flaws, and we still do have flaws to fix, but I think that it’s not really a problem for us anymore.

Do you have a personal goal you want to achieve this split?

Personally, I want to get at least 4th place. I really want to make it to Worlds this year.

This year’s your 9th year as a pro player. Have you ever thought about when the end of your pro career may come?

No, never. I think I’ll know when my time as a pro will come to an end, and that time will be when I personally feel that I’m falling behind my competition, whether it’s old age or some other external factor.

Many experts say that mages are considered weak in the current meta. As a pro known to play a lot of mages throughout your career, what are your thoughts on the current state of the mages?

I think that they’re not great, but they’re not terrible. Whatever type of champion you play, it’s a team game; factoring in power spikes and itemization, I think that it’s definitely harder for the teams to play around the mage champions in the current meta.
