A talk with the devs about StarCraft Remastered - what changed and what remained the same

Following the announcement of HD remastered Brood War in today’s “I Love StarCraft,” Blizzard held a QnA session to provide further information about how the game will be put together. The session was joined by Blizzard’s president and cofounder Mike Morhaime, VP of online technologies Robert Bridenbecker, and senior producer Pete Stilwell.

How are you going to handle the Brood War league, or the esport event in general?

Morhaime: Esport did play a crucial role in Brood War’s success. I hope esport continues to stand strong, but it’s difficult for us to announce the details of the league or esport in this very moment.

Can you tell us how transliteration will work for the new Brood War and how the game will be serviced in PC Bangs? Will the screen ratio stay the same as original?

Bridenbecker: Marine will be 마린 [Ma-Rin] also in Korean version of the game. [Instead of how it was translated into 해병, the Korean word for marine in SC2]

Morhaime: We don’t have any further detail about the PC Bang price model that we can share now, but you will have to purchase an upgrade to play the remastered Brood War. The original Brood War will be free to play once the 1.18 patch hits live next week. People can purchase upgrades once the remaster is released on summer.

Bridenbecker: About what we just said about Brood War being free to play, we are aware of the people that had purchased the game throughout the 19 years. We will let you know how we will deal with that soon later.

Stilwell: We are pulling SD and HD from the same game, so everything including the field of view will stay the same. The screen ratio stays the same too, but you can play the game in widescreen if you want.

Robert: We have a story about this. We shared our early prototype with pro StarCraft players and allowed them to change the graphics by pressing F1. They started in 4:3 screen ratio, but all changed to widescreen in the end. I suppose it’s because it’s easier to tell what’s happening in widescreen, and also because of better viewing pleasure.

Brood War has some lingering bugs that many people are already aware of. Are you going to fix all these? Will the maximum number of units per group still be fixed to 12?

Bridenbecker: We wanted to maintain the playable aspect of Brood War as much as possible, so the number of units per group will still be 12. Some of the bugs have become so iconic that it became the game’s main aspect itself. Some of them will remain as they have been, and some will be fixed. For example, we have kept the rather clunky moving mechanism of Dragoon but fixed the bug in which the unit would freeze and become unable to move. Valkyrie will also now have unlimited amount of missiles.

Any further information about the add-ons? How are they priced, and how will they work with the existing Blizzard platform?

Stilwell: Add-ons contain community-based features like W-Mode, hotkeys, socials, and automatically saved replays. We will also have cloud-based data sync system.

Bridenbecker: Those that already have preexisting account will automatically be synced to our modern platform while keeping their necessary information. It is hard for us to tell the price right now. The event today is aimed towards the announcement and the game’s play aspect.

What are the required PC specs for the remastered Brood War? Will we still be able to use our custom maps from original Brood War?

Bridenbecker: The required specs would be just enough to run Hearthstone.

Stilwell: We will of course support custom games. We want our players to enjoy the original contents as much as possible. Chat channels and use map settings will still be there. We did make improvements in the ladder system, and are also actively communicating with custom map developers. Custom maps are closely related with their communities.
