Gen.G indefinitely suspends content creator Ryujehong after sexist comments on stream

Former Overwatch player turned content creator Ryu “Ryujehong” Je-hong has been suspended of "all team-related activities" with his org Gen.G, Co-President and COO Arnold Hur announced Tuesday. The decision comes after Ryujehong made sexist comments on stream just a few days earlier — a behavior that didn't sit well with Gen.G's management.

"[...] Our belief is that whether you are a player or a streamer, anybody with a platform should understand the responsibility of the higher standards that come with it. As such, we have suspended all of Jehong's team-related activities until further notice."

Ryujehong, who joined Gen.G as content creator earlier this month, co-streamed with fellow female streamer Haegi on Jan.16, making several sexist and offensive comments during the broadcast, calling Haegi "a fucking bitch", and referring to women as "fox bitches" — a Korean term for "gold diggers".

Haegi herself came to Ryujehong's defense, saying his comments were more aking to banter between friends on a personal stream.

"So am I the streamer mentioned here? But I have one thing to say about this. I also swore at RJH and called him Kim Chi boy, and we both swore at each other, but why does the article only mention him? That feels unfair." [translation of Haegi's response courtesy of Reddit user samyhy — Ed.]

It's unclear whether the incident will affect Ryujehong's position with Gen.G in a more permanent way. An indefinite suspension, as opposed to direct firing, could very well mean a potential return of the streamer after a penal period.

Active since the earliest days of Overwatch, Ryujehong has been one of the most influential leaders in the space, winning back-to-back Overwatch World Cups in 2016 and 2017 and leading his Lunatic-Hai to back-to-back Overwatch APEX championships. In the OWL he mostly had mixed success with Seoul Dynasty (the OWL vertical of Gen.G), taking top 8 in the Inaugural and 2019 Seasons.
