Wizards of the Coast is releasing a handful of Magic: The Gathering cards featuring artwork by Bob Ross. The "Happy Little Gathering" collection consists of ten cards — two lands for each of the five mana types — featuring artwork from the late painter. The quote also appears as the flavor text of an Evolving Wilds card featuring Ross' artwork, which comes with the collection as a bonus.
The collection is the latest installment in a series of Secret Lair drops and takes its name from an iconic quote from Ross' hit show, The Joy of Painting, which the artist created and hosted: "We don't make mistakes, just happy little accidents." The quote is also featured as the flavor text of the Evolving Wilds card that features Ross' art.
The Joy of Painting has since had several of its episodes streamed on Twitch long after Ross' death in 1995, and as a whole has become an integral part of the tapestry of modern internet subculture. The streams, while intermittent, became so popular that a Bob Ross Twitch account has been launched.
The collection will be available in both foil and non-foil, and isone of the newly announced Secret Lair sets, Magic the Gathering‘s luxury set of limited edition printed-to-order cards that feature work from well-known artists. The Bob Ross set is part of the company’s new “Secretversary Superdrop.” Seb McKinnon’s work will appear on another new secret Lair collection. The Bob Ross variant of Evolving Wilds may be made available later separately via MTG: Arena.
The Bob Ross MTG collection is now available for pre-order on the Secret Lair website as of November 30, and will continue to be available for pre-order through December 14.
