[Worlds 2020] Suning take down JDG in the Worlds quarterfinals

In the second quarterfinals of the 2020 League of Legends World Championship, the LPL third seed, Suning Gaming wiped out the LPL second seed, JD Gaming, in a dominant 3-1 series. While Suning came in as the first seed from their group, JDG's seeding, plus their group opponent - DAMWON Gaming - had many considering JDG as favorites for the match. At the start of the analyst segment after the game, Eefje "Sjokz" Depoortere said, "Let's not mince words, here, this was a tremendous upset."

The teams both hail from China, but since there is only one round-robin in the LPL regular season, and since they never matched up in the playoffs, they haven't faced off since the second week of the 2020 Summer Split, where JDG won the series 2-0. Furthermore, Suning hadn't beaten JDG in nearly 800 days coming into this series. JDG came into the series on fire, winning the first game in a rather convincing manner. But Suning came back angry, slamming them in the second game with 26 kills in 27 minutes to even out the series.

Game 3 was over before it even began, with Suning's top laner Chen "Bin" Ze-Bin picking up the fastest double kill in Worlds history, starting the laning phase with a sheen on Gangplank to make Zhang "Zoom" Xing-Ran's life miserable. With Bin's lead, JDG never had a footing in that game outside of one teamfight victory that stalled the game just a couple of minutes.

In the final game, JDG took control early and looked poised to take it to Silver Scrapes, but after a few chaotic teamfights, Suning caught back up, and Tang "huanfeng" Huan-Feng became nearly unstoppable on his Jhin pickup. Suning stacked up the drakes and secured the Ocean Soul with a huanfeng Dancing Grenade, and the series was over.

Suning follows DAMWON Gaming, who won their quarterfinals match against DRX in the first series. TOP Esports will face Fnatic on Saturday and Gen.G will face G2 Esports on Sunday to finish the quarterfinals.
