GEN Ruler: "COVID-19 is still a huge ongoing societal problem, so to be honest, I'm very scared of Worlds"

On the 1st (KST), Gen.G took down SeolHaeOne Prince on day 32 of the 2020 LCK Summer split. While it seemed as if Gen.G staggered from SP’s aggression, they were able to systematically take down SP with a set score of 2-0.

The bot laner for Gen.G, Ruler, received Player of the Game (POG) in this series. In an exclusive one on one interview with him, not only did he share his thoughts on the match, he shared his confidence in his own abilities, and his analysis on Gen.G’s next opponents, DAMWON Gaming.

The following is the one on one interview with the bot laner and the captain of Gen.G, Ruler.

Congratulations on the 2-0 victory. How do you feel?

Overall, the match was pretty clean, and I had a lot of fun, so I’m pretty satisfied.

Game 1 looked pretty even throughout the game. Are there any points in the game that went out of your expectations?

Overall, not really, but there were moments where our ‘turn’ felt a little off. The points of the map that we needed to focus on felt slightly off at times as well.

Gen.G’s bot lane performed superbly today. Can you tell us a bit more about your synergy with your lane partner, Life?

Whenever I create an angle to engage, he reads it perfectly and goes in. It’s like our thoughts are synchronized.

Game 1, once again, ended with you cleaning up. Are you satisfied with your own performance?

I’m a little dissatisfied. Game 1 was heavily in our favor, but while I can’t state the reasons why, we did lose our lane priority.

Many people have nothing but praise for you, so how do you rate your own performance?

To be honest, I always believe that I’m the best. I believe the peak of my performance started in 2019, and I believe that I’m always improving.

Can you rate the top 3 bot laners in the LCK, just for fun?

Of course, I’m at the top (laughter). Right underneath me, I’d say Deft, Ghost, and Teddy.

Ghost has been a bot laner that’s been underestimated for a long time, especially because of the other laners that perform so well. How do you rate him?

I don’t think he has a distinct characteristic that separates him from the rest. However, he does his job in meshing the team together, and he’s always going 50-50 in lane, so I think he’s a very good player.

After DRX lost in a landslide fashion, people are saying that Gen.G is the team that will stop DWG. Coincidentally, they’re Gen.G’s next opponents, so in your opinion, what are their strengths and weaknesses?

DWG is a team that loves to fight the most in the LCK. However, if they lose a skirmish/teamfight, I do believe that they’ll be shaken up, just like how they did in their last match with us. With each teamfight victory, we’ll be able to dictate the overall flow of the game. While it may be the same for them with us as well, I believe that we’re the most confident team in the LCK. It’ll all come down to confidence.

The bot lane matchup against DWG will be interesting to watch as well. What do you think will be the deciding factor in victory?

Nowadays, the support’s champion is very important.when it comes to bot lane matchups. Life will not only have a great counter matchup, but also perform very well against DWG, so I’m not too worried.

Gen.G still has a very long way to go in the Summer split. As the captain of the team, what do you think the team needs to do to be on the very top of the standings?

There are still areas that we need to work on in terms of our synergy. We still have a long time to improve before the finals and Worlds, so we need to look at things long-term and work on that synergy. The most important things would be to not shy away from fights.

Details on the S10 World Championships have been unveiled. Not only will it be in a huge stadium, there’s a possibility of having spectators in the stadium as well. Thoughts?

To be honest, I’m very scared. COVID-19 is still a huge ongoing societal problem, so I think it’s still too early to let spectators in. However, as a pro gamer, having spectators gives us much more energy, than to have none. Still, I’m very scared.

Lastly, a word to your fans?

We may falter sometimes, but we always try to impress our fans. We’ll work harder to only impress our fans. Thanks for your support.
