Arc System Works revealed detailed in-game information today (Sept. 4) along with news that it will publish the Korean version of TYPE-MOON's 'Fate/EXTRA Record'.
'Fate/EXTRA Record' is a remake of 'Fate/EXTRA', the Fate series' first RPG released by TYPE-MOON on the PSP in July 2010. It is set during a Holy Grail War taking place in 'SE.RA.PH', a Spiritron Virtual World created by the 'Moon Cell Automaton'—a matter on the Moon possessing power similar to the Holy Grail. Popular illustrator Arco Wada participated as lead artist, recreating her signature art style in 3D characters alongside a unique battle system.
The project to reimagine this into a modern, Unreal Engine-based full-3D deck-building battle game was 'Fate/EXTRA Record', but it faced multiple difficulties after its announcement. Originally slated for a 2025 release, it was delayed to spring 2026 due to reasons such as full-voice recording schedules. Furthermore, in March, pre-orders conducted through Bandai Namco were canceled, followed by a series of complications on August 31, including publisher changes, the departure of the director, and restructuring of the development system. Although its release seemed uncertain as a result, a showcase held during SIE's State of Play on September 3 set the release date for January 28, 2027, reassuring anxious fans.
The newly released showcase broadly covers everything from basic Fate series lore to the world of Fate/EXTRA and the changes made in 'Fate/EXTRA Record'. It explained essential topics for understanding the Fate/EXTRA series, including the Holy Grail War fought over the wish-granting 'Holy Grail', the Moon Holy Grail War, and the virtual space known as SE.RA.PH.
Additionally, commentary-guided in-game footage revealed that the game unfolds as a 3D adventure, rather than the visual novel or Musou-style structures familiar to most TYPE-MOON fans. The Moon Holy Grail War is a battle to select a single winner among 128 participants, taking place over seven rounds. Beyond direct showdowns in 'Decisive Battles', players go through multiple stages after opponents are announced, including gathering information and exploring the Arena, during which events like enemy ambushes occur. After this roughly one-week cycle, the Decisive Battle takes place—where defeat means death and victory allows progression to the next stage. Repeating this process until the final stage constitutes the Moon Holy Grail War, and uncovering the story behind it alongside the final opponent is another major highlight of 'Fate/EXTRA Record'.
Meanwhile, the showcase satisfied fans' long-held curiosity by providing more details on RPG-style character progression and combat in addition to the overall context and showdowns against opponents. Combat in 'Fate/EXTRA' unfolds as turn-based deck-building utilizing AP costs, requiring players to defeat enemies by using each character's battle cards within their cost limits. Cards are divided into three types—Skill, Guard, and Attack—and since available cards vary depending on the Servant, each Servant offers a completely different combat experience. Beyond leveling up by defeating enemies, carefully selecting randomly acquired reward cards to efficiently build a deck is another appeal of 'Fate/EXTRA Record'.
In addition, strategic elements have been added, such as Masters intervening to use recovery items or supporting Servants with hacking skills called Code Casts to adaptively overcome critical situations. Notably, Ciel, familiar to TYPE-MOON fans, appears at the store, while "Lewis's Room"—where players enhance held Command Cards in exchange for in-game currency—features an NPC presumed to be Alice Kuonji from Witch on the Holy Night. Furthermore, a character believed to be Arcueid appeared during a battle shown at the end of the video, becoming a hot topic among TYPE-MOON fans.
Fate/EXTRA Record is scheduled to release on PC, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation on January 28, 2027, with further details available on the official website and Arc System Works Asia's official blog.
