Nintendo has officially announced that the new research and development facility currently under construction near its Kyoto headquarters will be named the 'Corporate Headquarters Development Center.' Previously referred to as the 'Second Development Building,' the facility is set to become a new R&D hub that integrates both software and hardware development.

The site for the new center was acquired by Nintendo from the City of Kyoto in April 2022. The city had issued a call for proposals, and Nintendo was selected as the developer. Located at 11-1 Kamitoba Hokodate-cho, Minami-ku, Kyoto, the building sits between the existing headquarters and the 'Development Center' completed in 2014.
Nintendo plans to equip the new building with office space for developers and server infrastructure to support its R&D operations. The company stated that it will continue to invest in these areas. The estimated construction cost is approximately ¥121 billion (about ₩1.15 trillion), with completion scheduled for March 2029.
This announcement follows several significant changes to the initial plan. When first announced in 2022, the building was slated to be a 12-story steel structure, approximately 72 meters high, with a total floor area of about 38k square meters, targeting completion by December 2027. However, during an August 2023 management policy briefing, President Shuntaro Furukawa announced plans to expand the scale to accommodate long-term growth in development staff, pushing the building to 13 stories or more and delaying completion to 2028 or later. Subsequent design adjustments ultimately reduced the building to nine stories above ground, though the total floor area and height now exceed the original plans.
Nintendo's long-term investment in this large-scale development hub is driven by the growth of its R&D workforce as the company expands. Currently, the area around Nintendo's Kyoto headquarters includes the main office building (completed in 2000) and the Development Center (completed in 2014). With the addition of the new Corporate Headquarters Development Center, three major facilities will be concentrated within a single block. This investment, coupled with the company's steady growth following the launch of the Nintendo Switch, is seen as a move to prepare for the future expansion of software and hardware development teams.
However, as Nintendo has not yet disclosed specific details regarding occupancy or organizational placement, further information on how the facility will be utilized is expected to be confirmed at a later date.
