Chengdu Hunters' Baconjack: "You never know what we're going to use, so it's a surprise on every map."

Going into this interview, I had no idea who Lo "Baconjack" Tzu-Heng was other than he used to play PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds. I was not sure if he named himself after a burger from Jack in the Box. Is he an accomplice for the Dallas Fuel?! Is he a secret spy?  I was not sure what to expect.

When we greeted each other, I immediately became a fan -- he was kind, humble, etc. -- all the positive words to describe Baconjack’s demeanor. He even knew some English!

After Chengdu defeated Atlanta in the last week of Stage 1, Baconjack talked to Inven Global about his skills as a DPS player, why he thinks Chengdu has an unorthodox playstyle, and how he learned how to speak English.

Congrats on the win today. You are a really good DPS and it showed in Stage 1. What sets you apart from the rest of the DPS players in the league?

Thanks for the compliment! I think what sets me apart is that I feel like I can play in this meta. I guess these great DPS players cannot adapt to playing Zarya, but I think I am a good Zarya.

Going into Stage 2 and beyond, I hope the meta shifts to a more DPS-favorite meta. It will be more exciting. I think the fans are ready to see my team’s full potential.

Is there anyone that you're looking forward to playing against if the meta is more DPS-favored?

I always thought about playing against Sayaplayer since he's a really good Widow player. But now, I guess it's Diem because his Widow impressed me. I want to 1v1 against him and see who's the better Widow. Who knows? There’s always the all-star break.

As far as going against other players like Surefour and Birdring who I heard are great DPS players too, I'm not sure how great they are since I was playing PUBG (PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds) last season. I didn't get to watch any Overwatch League last season.

Speaking of PUBG, how do your skills in PUBG translate into Overwatch?

It helped me a lot to get good at hitscan like Widowmaker and McCree. If it weren't for PUBG, I felt I wouldn't be good with hitscan. I don't play PUBG anymore since my full attention is on Overwatch.

Have you ever heard of APEX Legends?

No, I haven't played APEX yet, but I've heard of it. I think when we have time in between stages, I'll try my hand with APEX. It looks fun from what I've heard.

If you were at the Overwatch League last season, how well do you think you would have performed if you weren't in PUBG?

I wish I was here, to be honest. I didn't get to participate in the 2018 World Cup either. I feel like I missed out, but I'm very happy to be here now.

My favorite hero to use in this game is Tracer. I don't think I've got a chance to show all the fans what I'm capable of with Tracer because of the meta. Once the meta changes, I hope I have a chance to do that.

A lot of fans and Overwatch League analysts were impressed with Chengdu in Stage 1. Chengdu is one of the most exciting teams to watch this season. What makes Chengdu different compared to other teams?

I think it's because our tactics are very special. We don't use GOATS because everyone uses it so other teams know how to play against GOATS. For us, you never know what we're going to use, so it's a surprise on every map. Our team likes it and we're having fun! Of course, everyone wants to win but we like to have fun too.

Do you think playing with a unique team comp will be an advantage for you guys moving forward?

I think it always will. It's never bad to have too many cards in your hand -- you just need to learn how to use those cards.

Does Chengdu still have different comps we haven't seen yet on stage?

You'll have to see. There might be something up our sleeve.

What's something you're looking forward to after Stage 1?

I hope the meta changes. Please stop playing GOATS. I want to work hard with my team to qualify for the stage playoffs and be the stage champions. It would be a nice feeling to celebrate that with my team and our fans.

I think we're 80% confident we'll make it to playoffs. I believe we can defeat most of the teams besides New York. We almost had Vancouver, but New York is our worst enemy. Besides that, I have confidence we can take them all down.

Throughout this interview, I noticed your English is very good. How long have you been learning?

You know what? I learned English off the internet. I watched a lot of videos like YouTube and movies. I like to study English subtitles. If I don't know a word, I would use Google Translate to know what the hell is this. I don't like reading books, to be honest. Back when I was in school, I didn't have good grades. I didn't really study. Please don't tell my parents that.

My favorite shows to watch and study off of is The Walking Dead and Breaking Bad. They're my favorite shows. My favorite scene from Breaking Bad is when the owner of that chicken restaurant, Gus, died because of the old man in the wheelchair. That was awesome!

As long as your parents don’t see this interview, you’ll be fine. Does anyone else help you with English?

It's just a habit of mine. I don't really practice English outside Overwatch League. I'm just focused on the game at the moment.

Thanks for the interview. Any words for the fans?

I'll do my best no matter what and practice harder. Thank you for being there for us.
