Counter Logic Gaming defeated both FlyQuest and Cloud9 in week 7 of the 2019 LCS Summer Split and now sits in a 2nd place tie with the latter. At a record of 9-5, Team Liquid is the only team that stands between CLG and the top spot in the LCS after missing playoffs for three splits in a row.
Signing Kim "Ruin" Hyeong-min to replace Darshan "Darshan" Upadhyaya has worked wonders for the team on all fronts. Ruin's self-sufficiency in the Top Lane has stabilized the team, allowing Jungler Ramyond "Wiggily" Griffin to focus primarily on the team's star Mid Laner Tristan "PowerOfEvil" Schrage. Bot Laner Trevor "Stixxay" Hayes and Vincent "Biofrost" Wang have been nothing short of excellent, and arguably the most consistent laning duo in the LCS.
Stixxay joined Inven Global's Nick Geracie after a triumphant victory over FlyQuest to discuss Counter Logic Gaming's return to form. Stixxay confirmed that Ruin had breathed new life into the team and encouraged them to be more creative as a whole, but also pointed towards the break between the spring and summer splits as a crucial factor in CLG's recent success.
"...We went to a Korean bootcamp, and I'd say we got a lot closer as a team than in any of the previous splits," Stixxay explained. "Having someone new who sparks the whole team to have a new identity, and getting to bond more in Korea, helped us out a lot."
Counter Logic Gaming has four games left of regular split play against Clutch Gaming, Echo Fox, OpTic Gaming, and 100 Thieves. With one of the easier schedules amongst the elite teams in the LCS, CLG stealing a 1st place finish from reigning champions Team Liquid is far from out of the question.
