Group stage day 1: Will Western Teams Make It Out Of Groups?

The first day of the Group Stage has concluded. The results were rather unexpected.

The first game was against RNG and 1907 Fenerbahçe. Everyone expected RNG to take the lead and close the game out. Although 1907 Fenerbahçe did perform considerably well in the play-in stage, it was not enough to overcome RNG. Being experienced in a multitude of World Championship events, RNG was too veteran for a young upcoming team such as 1907 Fenerbahçe.

The 3 LCK teams claiming their wins was also expected. It was a bit unfortunate G2 lost to the 3rd seed LCK team, Samsung Galaxy. However, Samsung did not win out of sheer luck. All the LCK teams showed their dominance over the group stages today. Drawing conclusion that maybe, the only weakness LCK teams have are against the Chinese teams.

2 NA teams, 1 EU team, and a Turkish team fell to the hands of their opponent. Probably one of the most shocking aspects of today was the game with FNC and GAM. GAM (Gigabyte Marines) took a convincing win against FNC (Fnatic). Because it is GAM’s first international stage appearance, there was little to no information about their play styles. In their first international game on the group stage, GAM presented a style of gameplay that was the most impressionable against FNC.

The fight for Chinese pride between RNG and EDG was somewhat settled. RNG winning their first game whilst EDG lost theirs. EDG, who came 1st seed from the LPL, lost their first game to AHQ. In the 1st day’s last match, EDG was given the most hype for being the 1st seed of the LPL and performing in Clearlove’s home town. However, AHQ triumphed everyone’s expectations and stayed steadfast throughout the whole match. The end results leading to EDG’s first loss against AHQ.

The results of the 1st day is displayed below. EU and NA teams suffered a loss. Although it is unfortunate the Western Teams lost their games today, there are still many games to come. We will have to sit back and watch to see how the Group Stages unravel.

¤ A must watch game

If one match was to be chosen to be a must watch, it would be the game with GAM and FNC. The game’s MVP, GAM’s jungler Levi, ignoring the set meta picked Nocturne, teasing FNC. The important factor was not only the Nocturne pick but also the early level experience strategy. When Soaz was lv 2 and Rekkles lv 4, Levi had hit lv 6 in 5 minutes and grabbing the double kill. You can’t help but be in awe/admire this ingenious plan and execution from the side of GAM.
