[Worlds 2020] The 3 most slept on players through the first half of the group stage

Before the start of the 2020 League of Legends World Championship, the Inven Global editorial staff pooled the players qualified for the event and ranked the top 5 players in each of the five roles.

That being said, it's important to acknowledge when one has misjudged a competitor's talent, and throughout the first half of the Worlds 2020 group stage, three players have exceeded our expectations and their respective performances deserve to be acknowledged.

Let's take a look at three players at Worlds 2020 who have exceeded our expectations throughout the first half of the group stage.

Oskar "Selfmade" Boderek — Fnatic

Fnatic's jungler did not make the Inven Global top 5 in his role because of a combination of team-based inconsistency and failing to maintain a level that eclipsed his peers, specifically MAD Lions jungler Zhiqiang "Shad0w" Zhao and G2 Esports jungler Marcin "Jankos" Jankowski.

Since the start of Fnatic's Worlds 2020, Selfmade has done nothing but exceed expectations. Fnatic currently sits tied for 1st place in Group C with a 2-1 record in large part due to Selfmade's outclassing of Gen.G jungler Kim "Clid" Tae-min and TSM jungler Mingyi "Spica" Lu. Selfmade was particularly dominant against Clid, who was selected as one of Inven Global's 5 best junglers at Worlds. Even in a loss to LGD, Selfmade won his individual matchup against Han "Peanut" Wang-ho.

Selfmade's Evelynn has already proven to be excellent, and if he can maintain his level of play on another premiere meta jungler in Graves as he has in Group C thus far, Fnatic should feel confident about its chances to make a deep run at Worlds 2020.

Ryu "Keria" Min-seok — DRX

While his rookie campaign throughout the 2020 League of Legends Champions Korea season was excellent, Keria was left off of Inven Global's top 5 supports at Worlds 2020 due to a combination of inexperience and his extremely talented teammates potentially hiding his limitations in his international debut at Worlds 2020.

Through his first three matches in Group D, Keria has proven he is every bit the player he showed domestically on the international stage. His Thresh was picked off frequently against Top Esports, but his Pantheon and Lux against Unicorns of Love and FlyQuest, respectively, were excellent.

Keria will have to prove himself in a best-of-five series before establishing world class status, but if DRX's first three matches are any indication, the rookie support is without a doubt one of the five best competitors in his role at the World Championship.

Cho "BeryL" Geon-hee — DAMWON Gaming

It would be easy to cast BeryL off as simply good enough for DAMWON Gaming's  already stacked roster. It would be easy to say that at 23 years old, he is simply a safer, risk-averse alternative to Ryu "Hoit" Ho-seong, who has split the starting position with BeryL since DAMWON's promotion to the LCK ahead of the 2018 Spring Split.

It was easy to assume that because of these factors and DAMWON's enormous amount of talent in other positions that BeryL was not a top 5 support at Worlds 2020. That assumption could not have been more wrong.

DAMWON Gaming has dominated Group B thus far, notably making quick work of JD Gaming it was supposed to be the most competitive match of the group stage. BeryL shown in his team's three wins s that he's not simply being swept along with the DWG current and that if needed, possesses the ability to be a singular engage threat when other aggressive members of his team like top laner Jang "Nuguri" Ha-gwon prefers a utility-centric pick like Lulu.

BeryL may not be who you see who in every post-game interview or highlight reel in the mountain of DAMWON Gaming victories amassed throughout the 2020 LoL Esports season, but after his performance at Worlds so far, it's no longer a matter of whether he's a top 5 support at the World Championship — it's a matter of whether anyone can dethrone him as the current best support on the planet.
