LGD qualifies for Worlds 2020 group stage after eliminating Legacy Esports

LGD Gaming has qualified for the 2020 League of Legends World Championship main event after sweeping Legacy Esports 3-0 in the play-in stage, knocking them out of the competition. They join the other three LPL teams in the group stage.

Despite their qualification, the #4 LPL seed has raised concerns among analysts and fans due to their lackluster performance in the opening matches. Their inconsistent map awareness led to them being taken advantage of by their opponents, but come the best-of-5's of the play-in elimination phase, LGD managed to somewhat recover. Sweeping wins over Rainbow7 and Legacy Esports secured their group stage ticket, alleviating at least some of the pressure from the public.

Since no two teams from the same region can play in the same Worlds group, LGD has been sorted into Group C. The group is arguably one of the most unpredictable groups of the tournament, and LGD will play alongside Team SoloMid, Fnatic, and Gen.G. Only two of those teams will secure a spot in the playoffs, as the double round-robin begins Oct. 3.

While Oceania's Legacy Esports will now head home, the region can look back at its Worlds run with pride. Legacy finished second in Group A, only losing to Team Liquid, and above stronger on-paper teams like MAD Lions and SuperMassive Esports.
