The LEC has announced its format for 2020 — Summer Playoffs now directly determine all representatives for Worlds

With only three days left until the LEC kicks off, Riot decided it was time to reveal just what the European competition will look like in 2020. Although the regular season hasn't changed much, the road to the League of Legends World Championship is a bit different for the competitors.

After each regular season, during which a Double Round Robin of Bo1 matches determines who's on top and who flopped, the six best teams enter the seasonal Playoffs. In the Spring Playoffs, a double-elimination bracket is formed. The teams at fifth and sixts place at the end of the Spring Split, are automatically seeded into the lower half of the bracket, and face off against each other.

The other teams are seeded into the upper bracket, with the #1 team deciding if who they want to face off against: the third place team of the team that finished fourth. The team that finished second in the Spring Split will face off against the opponent left over. The winner of the Spring Split will represent Europe at the 2020 Mid-Season Invitational.

Whereas the LCS completely abandoned the Championship Point system, the LEC is keeping them. However, there won't be a Gauntlet like anymore, like in 2019. Instead, the total points earned during the Spring Split and Summer Split determine the seeding for the Summer Playoffs. The Summer Playoffs directly determine all European representatives for Worlds 2020.

The Championship Point distribution is as follows:

Team placement Championship Points Spring Championship Points Summer
1 90 140
2 70 100
3 50 70
4 30 50
5 20 30
6 10 20
