'Penguin Colony,' a narrative adventure game that reimagines the world of H.P. Lovecraft's fiction from the perspective of a penguin, has been unveiled.
The game is set in Antarctica in 1939. Two human factions—the Nazis and a guardian group known as the Kaitiaki—are heading deep into the Antarctic, each with their own agenda. The Nazis seek to harness the power of an ancient, unimaginable entity for destructive purposes, while the Kaitiaki aim to put that power back to sleep, as they have been tasked to do for generations. The player takes on the role of a local penguin drawn to strange sights and sounds, witnessing the human characters as they encounter ancient ruins and slowly descend into madness.
There is no combat or direct intervention in the game. The horror of the cosmic genre is conveyed indirectly through the madness of the human characters, and the penguin's detached, observant gaze heightens the sense of alienation characteristic of the genre.
Gameplay involves freely exploring the open Antarctic environment. Players can slide across ice sheets or swim through the frigid ocean to navigate the terrain, utilizing different types of penguins—each with unique abilities—to access narrow crevices or hidden areas. The game features a non-linear structure where players collect clues scattered throughout the environment without a fixed order or path, allowing the narrative to be pieced together through active exploration.
Furthermore, while the game is based on various Lovecraftian works such as 'At the Mountains of Madness' and 'The Shadow Out of Time,' it distinguishes itself by aiming to expand the lore rather than simply adapting the stories.
'Penguin Colony' is being developed by OriGame Digital, the New Zealand-based indie studio behind 'Umurangi Generation,' and is published by Fellow Traveller. First announced last September, the game is currently available for wishlist and demo download on Steam, with a full release scheduled for PC and Nintendo Switch in 2026.
