Flash Returns in ASL Season 21 as Jaedong Draws Group of Death

Week 2 of the ASL Season 21 Round of 24, which opened last week, will take place from Monday through Wednesday.

The ASL Season 21 qualifiers were defined by Terran’s overwhelming strength. Only three Protoss players advanced, while no fewer than 14 Terrans made it through qualifying and joined the main event, making Terran’s dominance stand out all the more. Even so, Week 1 still produced a fair share of surprises. The biggest shock, without question, was the elimination of Kim “Soulkey” Min Chul, the player who had turned ASL into a Zerg world.

Placed in Group A alongside three Terrans, Kim “Soulkey” Min Chul was knocked out in the Round of 24 after losing to Choi “sSak” Ho Seon in the winners’ match and Kim “Ample” Tae Yong in the final match. Group B, meanwhile, featured one Terran and three Protoss, and Jung “Rain” Yoon Jong and Jo “Sharp” Ki Seok advanced to the Round of 16. Group C consisted of three Zergs and one Protoss, and Yoon Soo Chul and Jo “herO” Il Jang advanced out of the Round of 24. Yoon Soo Chul had recently shown a dramatic rise in form in the Zerg mirror, and he proved that improvement on the ASL stage as well.

Now, beginning today, Groups D, E, and F will play out over the next three days.

Group D features Lee “Light” Jae Ho, Kim “Calm” Yoon Hwan, Kim “RoyaL” Ji Sung, and Park “Mind” Sung Gyun. The key storyline there is how Kim “Calm” Yoon Hwan will fare in a brutal three-Terran group. On Tuesday, Group E is made up entirely of Terrans and includes Lee “Flash” Young Ho, who is returning after a long absence. Lee Young Ho had not participated in ASL for quite some time, and it would not be an exaggeration to say that the biggest point of interest in this entire Round of 24 is what kind of form he will show upon his return. Also in that group is Lim “PianO” Jin Muk, who has been active as a commentator for race-based StarCraft broadcasts. He is viewed as the weakest player in the group, but with it being a mirror matchup and a single-game format, no one can say what kind of upset he might produce.

The final group of the Round of 24, Group F, is widely regarded as the group of death. The races are evenly distributed, and the balance is fairly strong with Do “Best” Jae Wook, Shin “Leta” Sang Moon, Kim “ZerO” Myung Woon, and Lee “Jaedong” Jae Dong. Shin “Leta” Sang Moon may be seen as slightly weaker on paper, but his style differs from that of a typical Terran, and the fact that the Round of 24 is played in best-of-one matches makes that another variable. There is also considerable interest in Lee “Jaedong” Jae Dong’s matches, as his recent performances have been excellent and many fans are expecting big things from him. Some fans are already looking ahead as well — hoping not only for the Round of 16 group selection ceremony, but also for a deeper-stage revival of the famed LeeSsang rivalry between Lee “Flash” Young Ho and Lee “Jaedong” Jae Dong.

Meanwhile, once all Round of 24 matches have concluded, last season’s seeded players — Park “soma” Sang Hyun, Jang “SnOw” Yoon Chul, Kim “Bisu” Taek Yong, and Hwang “BarrackS” Byung Young — will join the 12 players who advanced from the Round of 24. The full Round of 16 will then begin in earnest, starting with the group selection ceremony on April 6th.
