UPDATE 10/15: Cloud9 and Rogue's tiebreaker match at the end of Group A was the longest game played at the 2021 League of Legends World Championship thus far, but ultimately, it was Cloud9 who secured the victory on a knife's edge and will be moving on to the knockout stage. This is the first time a team from the League Championship Series has qualified for a Worlds knockout stage since 2018 — a feat also achieved by C9.
Subsequently, Rogue, who eliminated FunPlus Phoenix in a tiebreaker to face Cloud9, has become the eighth team to be eliminated from Worlds 2021 and finishes 3rd place in Group A.
FunPlus Phoenix has been eliminated from the 2021 League of Legends World Championship. Initially predicted as one of the favorites to win Worlds 2021, FPX massively underperformed in Group A and is the first major region team to be eliminated from the tournament.
DWG KIA took full control of Group A, going 6-0 to become the first team to qualify for the Worlds 2021 knockout stage.
FPX, on the other hand, while expected to escape the group with DK, struggled against the rest of the competition and ended the group in a three-way tie at 2-4 with Cloud9 and Rogue. Because C9's wins were the shortest of the three teams, RGE and FPX faced off first, with the League of Legends Professional League being sent home in a shocking upset.
FunPlus Phoenix is the first team to be eliminated in the group stage at Worlds 2021 and the seventh team overall. Unicorns of Love and Infinity Esports were the first two teams eliminated in the group stage of the Worlds 2021 Play-in, and shortly after, Galatasary Esports, Beyond Gaming, PEACE, and RED Canids were eliminated in the Play-in knockout stage.
Rogue will now face off against Cloud9 to see who will join DWG KIA to qualify for the knockout stage as the 2nd seed from Group A. Rogue got the best of Cloud9 in the first iteration of EU vs NA in the group, but C9 evened the head-to-head as part of a very impressive second round-robin.
Cloud9 was able to shore up its issues in the mid-game to take a win against FPX in addition to its win against Rogue, while Rogue's matches have featured a supercharged Emil "Larsson" Larssen in the mid lane and continued excellence from AD carry Steven "Hans Sama" Liv. The winner of C9 vs RGE will continue its Worlds 2021 run, while the loser will join FPX at the airport.
