Hideo Kojima has made another surprise appearance on television. This time, it wasn't for a game he created, but a cameo as a high-ranking police official in Season 2 of the hit TBS drama 'VIVANT.' However, because his trademark glasses and beard were removed, most viewers failed to recognize him even after the broadcast.

TBS Television aired the first episode of 'VIVANT' Season 2 on the 26th as part of its Sunday Theater block. Hideo Kojima, director of Kojima Productions, appeared in the episode as Ken Watanuki, the Superintendent General of the Metropolitan Police Department. Although his appearance was brief—limited to a photograph without any dialogue—the news of his cameo quickly became a hot topic.

Interest spiked again the following day when Kojima shared behind-the-scenes photos on his social media. 'VIVANT' is a spy thriller starring Masato Sakai that follows the intertwining stories of an unofficial Self-Defense Force unit, public security, and an international terrorist organization. Following the massive success and social impact of Season 1 in 2023, Season 2 picks up immediately after the final scene of the previous season.

Despite the anticipation, Kojima was difficult to spot in the episode. Some viewers even reacted by saying they thought it was just someone with the same name, as his appearance on screen looked significantly different from his usual self. This was due to his face being digitally retouched with CG.

The reason for the digital alteration was that Kojima looked 'too young' to portray a character in the position of Superintendent General. His beard was also removed because it was deemed inappropriate for the role. Between filming without his signature glasses and the subsequent CG facial adjustments, it is no wonder his appearance went largely unnoticed.

This cameo came about through Kojima's friendship with Yohei Miyazaki, the director of 'VIVANT' Season 2. Miyazaki revealed on social media that he has worked with Kojima on several projects, starting with his directorial debut 'Japan Sinks: People of Hope' and continuing after the first season of 'VIVANT.' In 2023, Miyazaki even visited Kojima Productions in person alongside TBS announcer Risa Unai, who is known as a gaming expert.

While known primarily as a game developer, Kojima is also famous for his deep passion for media, including film and television. He consistently shares movie reviews and commentary on his social media and YouTube channel, and has a history of attending major film events, including the Cannes Film Festival. This influence is reflected in his games, with the 'Death Stranding' and 'Metal Gear Solid' series incorporating cinematic direction and casting famous actors.

In fact, this is not Kojima's first appearance in video media. Starting with a role in the 2003 film 'Azumi,' he later appeared in Nicolas Winding Refn's series 'Too Old to Die Young.' He has also made numerous cameos in the gaming industry, including an appearance in 'Cyberpunk 2077' and roles in his own 'Metal Gear Solid' and 'Death Stranding' series. Recently, he provided the Japanese voice for the character Paul Moldavrant in the 2025 animated film 'Zootopia 2.'

Meanwhile, following 'Death Stranding 2,' Kojima is currently preparing several new titles simultaneously. These include the new project 'OD,' starring Sophia Lillis and Hunter Schafer, and the upcoming PS5 title 'Physint,' which has garnered significant attention for the casting of Ma Dong-seok.
