HBO Developing Baldur’s Gate 3 TV Series Set After the Game’s Ending

Having scored a hit with The Last of Us as a game-to-TV adaptation, HBO is now planning its next project: Baldur’s Gate 3.

Deadline reported that HBO is producing a Baldur’s Gate television series based on Hasbro’s video game franchise. The series will be led by Craig Mazin as showrunner and executive producer. Mazin previously won multiple Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe (for Best Miniseries) for HBO’s Chernobyl. He also spearheaded the production of The Last of Us TV series alongside Neil Druckmann.

Mazin will also serve as a writer on the project, participating directly in the scripting. Speaking to Deadline the same day, Mazin said he had “played Baldur’s Gate 3 for 1,000 hours,” adding that it feels like a dream to be able to continue the story created by Larian Studios and Wizards of the Coast. He also noted that he has been a fan of Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) for 15 years, and expressed his respect for Swen Vincke and Larian’s interpretation of the material.

Another notable detail was included in the report: unlike The Last of Us, which focuses on recreating the original, HBO’s Baldur’s Gate series will cover events immediately after the story of Baldur’s Gate 3. That means viewers will be able to explore the post-ending world of the game and encounter both familiar characters from the original as well as new ones—while following a D&D-like journey in which a weak protagonist grows stronger.

Francesca Orsi, EVP and Head of Drama, HBO Programming, explained why HBO chose Mazin for the project. The reasons were his deep and long-standing passion for the source material, and his talent for building characters into a fully realized live-action world.

Meanwhile, the series is not connected to the development of any other Baldur’s Gate games, and will proceed independently regardless of game development schedules. In addition, Netflix’s live-action D&D series The Forgotten Realms will continue as a separate project, even though it shares the setting. The Forgotten Realms was originally set up at Paramount, but was later taken on by Netflix, with Stranger Things producer Shawn Levy attached as producer. Unlike the newly revealed Baldur’s Gate 3 TV series, it will unfold as an entirely new story.

With HBO having driven the commercial success of The Last of Us, attention is now on what form it will give Baldur’s Gate 3—a title that has surpassed 20 million units in cumulative sales, boasts numerous Game of the Year (GOTY) wins, and carries the added weight of the D&D name.
