Japanese Rapper OZworld to Headline Apex Legends Global Series Year 5 Championship Opening Ceremony in Sapporo

Japanese hip-hop artist OZworld is set to headline the opening ceremony of the Apex Legends Global Series (ALGS) Year 5 Championship on Jan. 18, as the tournament returns to the Daiwa House PREMIST DOME for its final event of the season.

The performance will take place ahead of the championship’s Grand Finals and will feature several of OZworld’s songs, including “NINOKUNI.” Organizers said the opening ceremony is designed to blend live music, multimedia production and competitive esports, marking the start of the season’s most important matches.

OZworld, who hails from Okinawa, is known for a style that combines futuristic production with themes centered on identity and personal resilience. In addition to music, his public profile spans gaming culture, fashion and collaborations with other artists. He also has a direct link to the competitive scene, having previously organized and participated in a Japanese tournament featuring Apex Legends in 2022.

In a statement released with the announcement, OZworld said he is a longtime fan of Apex Legends and is particularly drawn to the character Octane, adding that he is eager to perform in front of fans in Sapporo.

Ceremony to open $2 million championship event

Event organizers said the opening ceremony will feature large-scale LED visuals and a 24-person dance crew, leading into the championship finals, where the top teams from around the world will compete for a total prize pool of $2 million.

“Japan is home to one of the most passionate Apex Legends communities, and we wanted to channel that energy into an unforgettable experience for our players and fans,” said Monica Dinsmore, head of esports at Electronic Arts. “OZworld’s passion for the game and his musical identity make him a natural fit for this moment.”

The ALGS Championship represents the culmination of Year 5 competition, following regional leagues and international playoff events throughout the season. The Sapporo finals will determine the year’s world champion.
