The actor cast as Kratos in Amazon Prime Video's live-action 'God of War' series is being replaced. According to an exclusive report by Deadline, the production team decided to recast the role after Ryan Hurst, who was set to play Kratos, sustained an injury during filming.
Multiple foreign media outlets reported that Hurst suffered a severe bicep tear while filming a stunt scene in late June and is currently recovering after undergoing surgery. Production on 'God of War' has been halted since the incident. While Hurst's recovery is the top priority, the production company ultimately decided to recast the role because his recovery period would exceed the filming schedule.
At the time of Hurst's injury, four episodes had already been completed, and some sources indicated that parts of subsequent episodes had also been filmed. This footage will be reshot with the new actor, as the physical growth of child actor Callum Vinson, who plays Atreus, makes it difficult to utilize the existing footage. The new actor for Kratos has not yet been announced.
Ryan Hurst was cast as Kratos in the live-action 'God of War' series this past January. He is known for his roles as Opie Winston in 'Sons of Anarchy' and Beta in 'The Walking Dead,' and he provided the voice and motion capture for Thor in the game 'God of War Ragnarök,' a performance that earned him a nomination for Best Performer in a Supporting Role at the BAFTA Games Awards.
The 'God of War' series from Prime Video follows the journey of Kratos and his son, Atreus, as they set out to scatter the ashes of his wife and Atreus' mother, Faye. Kratos attempts to teach his son how to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human.
The live-action series, based on the 'God of War' game franchise, has already been greenlit for two seasons. Pre-production is currently underway in Vancouver, with Ronald D. Moore serving as showrunner, executive producer, and writer. Emmy Award winner Frederick E.O. Toye is set to direct the first two episodes.
