From an internet urban legend to a mockumentary and now a feature film, the Backrooms have captivated audiences. Now, even people in the real world are getting lost in this inescapable space.
The film 'Backrooms,' produced by A24, unveiled its production process at CCXP Mexico ahead of its May 29 release. The movie is based on the creepypasta of the same name, which gained massive attention after Kane Pixels adapted the 2019 internet horror story into a video series. In 2022, Kane Pixels set out to recreate the original short story using 3D software like Blender. He subsequently uploaded a series of found-footage shorts that garnered significant acclaim, with the series now boasting over 200 million views.
The immense popularity of the Backrooms has led to the release of numerous games based on the concept, and similar creepypastas continue to be produced. Notably, this film adaptation incorporates the specific lore established by Kane Pixels, including unique entities and the research conducted at the Async facility.
To make the film as realistic as possible, the production team reportedly built an actual 30,000-square-foot Backrooms set—roughly the size of six basketball courts. In an era where CGI is standard in modern filmmaking, building a physical set of this scale is rare for a contemporary horror movie. Furthermore, the team went through over 50 sample tests just to perfect the eerie wallpaper. With a set large enough to walk through and a disorienting, labyrinthine layout, some staff members even got lost during filming.
This commitment to realistic set design and the production team's efforts have raised expectations for the film's quality among its star-studded cast. Chiwetel Ejiofor, a BAFTA Best Actor winner for '12 Years a Slave,' plays the protagonist, Clark, who falls into the Backrooms from the basement of his own furniture store. Renate Reinsve, who won the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival for 'The Worst Person in the World,' plays Dr. Mary Klein, a therapist who sets out to find him. The film also features production contributions from James Wan, Shawn Levy, and Osgood Perkins.
The film is directed by Kane Parsons—the real name of the creator behind the viral Kane Pixels videos. At just 20 years old, Parsons has become the youngest feature film director in A24's history. A24 continues to maintain its unique identity as one of the most notable film studios today, consistently delivering masterpieces built on strong directorial vision and high accessibility.
Backrooms' is scheduled for release in North America on May 29, with a domestic release in Korea also slated for June.
