[Guide] What are Quick Attack and Double Attack in Legends of Runeterra?

There are many cards in Legends of Runeterra, and each have their own stats and effects to make them unique. It can be overwhelming, especially if you’re new to the card game genre, to learn all these effects. That’s why we’re dissecting all the keywords in a series of guides. In this one we’re taking a look at Quick Attack and Double Attack.

Quick Attack is quite a simple mechanic to understand in Legends of Runeterra. When you’re the one initiating the attack, your units with Quick Attack strike before their blockers do, in the combat phase. This means that, if you have a 3/2 unit with Quick Attack, and an enemy unit with three or less health is blocking it, your unit will kill its blocker and walk away unscathed—the blocker dies before it can strike back. If the blocker survives though, it does strike back and inflicts its attack power as damage to your unit.

Double Attack is more powerful, but easy to understand if you know what Quick Attack does: a unit with Double Attack first executes a Quick Attack, and then attacks regularly, simultaneous with its blocker. Like Quick Attack, Double Attack is only active when you’re the one initiating the attack. Below are a few cards that work either with Quick Attack or with Double Attack.

Academy Prodigy is one of the most straightforward examples of cards with Quick Attack. The Piltover & Zaun card has merely one health, but makes up for it by being able to dish out a decent punch, all for two mana. With her Quick Attack, she cleans up the early enemy units with ease when she’s on the offense.

If you want to surprise your opponent with a sudden execution, look no further than Rising Spell Force. The buff it grants to the targeted unit is significant for the increase in attack power alone, but the fact that it also grants Quick Attack make it one of the most powerful offensive spells. Since it’s a Burst spell your opponent can only react to it post-cast, so if you time it well and force them to have spent their mana already, there’s nothing the enemy can do about it anymore.

There are only two cards in Legends of Runeterra with Double Attack: Lucian (level 2) and Senna (after her buff triggers). The power couple is uniquely able to clean up enemies through sheer attack pressure, and there’s high value in buffing Lucian as well as Senna to get them out of reach of enemy pressure. When supported well enough, they can snowball the game straight to victory.
