The Nintendo Switch ‘switches on’ come March 3rd

Nintendo unveiled their newest console, the Nintendo Switch, on January 13th (Local time) through the Nintendo Switch Presentation 2017. Information such as the release date, features, packages, and game titles have been announced as well.

Let's start with the information that we've all been waiting for:
The Nintendo Switch will be released on March 3rd, and it will cost 29,980 yen in Japan and $299.99 in the United States.

It will be shipped with a Nintendo Switch Console, a Nintendo Switch Dock, a pair of Joy-Con (Nintendo Switch’s main controller), two straps and a grip for the Joy-Con, an HDMI cable, and an AC adapter. There will be two variations of the Nintendo Switch Package at launch, one with a pair of gray Joy-Con and the other with a pair of red-and-blue Joy-Con.

Online services including online gameplay and voice chat will be available, but it will switch to being a paid service starting this Fall. Local multi-play of up to 8 players is also supported. The most surprising and welcome news about the system is that it will not be region-locked.

It can be connected to external displays with an HDMI cable through the Dock, but it will also be possible to play the Nintendo Switch with just the Console. For this purpose, the Console will have a built-in stand, and the Joy-con can be used attached to the Console or detached into two, allowing split-screen gameplay for up to 2 people.

According to Nintendo, the portable mode will have a battery life of 2.5 hours to 6.5 hours, and they specifically mentioned that the battery will last about 3 hours when playing the Legend of Zelda. The Nintendo Switch will be charged over USB-C, and it can be charged on-the-go using an AC adapter or external battery packs.

As for the Joy-Con, it is designed to be used both while being attached and detached to the Console. Its features will include an infrared motion sensor, a vibration feature (dubbed 'HD Rumble'), an NFC amiibo Reader on the home button, a screenshot button that will eventually allow video captures, an accelerometer, and a gyro sensor.

Each half of the Joy-con will also have two extra buttons that are to be used when detached from the Console. Also, as mentioned above, it will be available in two colors - in gray or red-and-blue.

Finally, it wouldn't be a console announcement without the actual game titles. While some titles have already been announced prior to this presentation (such as Skyrim), there are many that have been announced for the first time.

Notably, there are some new titles with a brand-new IP such as 'ARMS' from Nintendo and 'Project Octopath Traveler' from Square Enix. Sequels from highly acclaimed IPs such as 'Splatoon 2', 'Mario Kart 8', 'Xenoblade 2' and 'Sonic Mania' were announced as well.

With over 50 developers on board with more than 80 titles being developed for the Nintendo Switch, there should be plenty more surprises coming over the next few weeks.
