Jeff Kaplan reports abusive chat on the decline thanks to LFG and Endorsement system.

Today, in a blog post entitled "Our progress so far" Jeff Kaplan, Vice President of Blizzard Entertainment and Lead Designer for Overwatch shared positive statistics about the LFG and Endorsement system.

The system that aims to bring players together and subsequently reward them for helpful and positive in-game behavior has, reportedly, been a resounding success. Scott Mercer, Principal Designer at Overwatch defended the system at length about a month ago in response to a vocal part of the communities skepticism about its effectiveness and now it appears that Mercer's faith in the system was well founded.

The Numbers

Kaplan shared the following numbers on his forum post:

"The % of Competitive Matches that Contain Abusive Chat is down:

26.4% in the Americas
16.4% in KR

The % of Daily Players being Abusive is down:

28.8% in the Americas
21.6% in KR"

While the numbers don't translate to the quality of the matches with regard to equal skilled matchmaking, it does show that, when properly incentivized, a significant portion of the Overwatch community will refrain from toxic language and the abuse of their teammates. Being known as a good teammate or leader is a point of pride for many online gamers and chasing that positive label while grouping with like-minded players is doing great things for Overwatch's toxicity problem.
