In Azur Promilia, the Starbounder travels across the continent of Promilia, meeting companions of various races alongside Kibo. Beyond battling formidable foes, players can recruit wild Kibo as companions, search for hidden treasure, and build their homesteads. A defining feature of Azur Promilia's content is the ability to spend every moment alongside Kibo, whether in combat, exploration, or daily life.
The foundation of combat showcased in the Korean CBT is tag-action fighting, where players swap between three characters. Attacks utilize basic attacks, skills, and ultimate abilities, with options to dodge or guard against enemy moves, while perfectly timed guards execute a parry counterattack. Players must judge when to press the assault or fall back, switching characters to chain their respective skills together. Breaking an enemy's guard also allows players to sustain their offensive with cooperative attacks alongside Kibo.

Building a party tailored to character attributes and roles is equally important. Players assemble their team by combining heavy damage dealers with support characters that heal or buff, further bolstered by Kibo abilities. In the CBT, players could pair a Kibo with each character to assist in battle using skills. The system prompts thoughtful strategy not only in selecting characters, but also in pairing them with the right Kibo.
The method for welcoming these adventure companions is 'Starlink'. Players attempt to recruit Kibo found in the wild by using Starlink Cards, bringing them on as companions if successful. Cards have tiers, which affect their success rate. Not every encounter leads to battle; in the Korean CBT, docile Kibo could be befriended via Starlink without engaging in combat.

Recruited Kibo showcase new forms through 'Growth'. Kibo growth involves multiple stages, such as juvenile and mature phases, with appearances, talents, and skills changing depending on the stage. Official showcases demonstrated this by showing a tiny 'Sprout' growing into a 'Cabbage Chicken'. Experiencing how Kibo transform and what abilities they gain as they are raised—beyond their initial appearance when first met—adds to the joy of collecting and nurturing.

For players seeking greater challenges with their assembled companions, 'Crisis Subjugation' awaits. In this co-op PvE mode, three players join forces to face powerful foes, demanding a different rhythm from solo combat. The core objective is to defeat bosses through teamwork while reacting to enemy attacks. Official previews presented this as a formidable mission requiring cooperation with two teammates, highlighting it as a test of both combat prowess and teamwork.
While exploring the open world, players can also enjoy 'Finding Umi,' which requires careful observation of their surroundings. Umi hide inside chests or surrounding objects across the continent awaiting the Starbounder, granting treasure when discovered. Unexpected encounters lie hidden even in seemingly ordinary scenery. It serves as an exploration mechanic that encourages players to inspect roadside chests and eye-catching objects rather than simply rushing toward a destination.

After returning from an adventure, players can build and tend to their homestead through 'Housing' alongside Kibo. Various life-skill activities gather here, including growing crops, hatching eggs, and crafting equipment. The fun of customizing lodgings adds to the experience, creating a personal sanctuary where the Starbounder prepares for their next journey.
In Housing, Kibo also act as workers that labor alongside the player. In the Korean CBT, assigning a suitable Kibo to a task accelerated production speed, allowing players to watch them breathe fire to bake bricks or turn spinning wheels. In farming, they assisted in every step from sowing seeds to watering and harvesting crops. Watching Kibo rest after finishing work or approach the Starbounder adds the warmth of living together to the process of expanding production facilities.
Housing's crafting capabilities feed directly back into field exploration. Korean CBT guides detailed crafting Kibo saddles at a workbench to mount specific Kibo. If a Kibo's satiety drops while riding, running becomes difficult, requiring players to keep them fed. This creates a gameplay loop where players build a homestead with Kibo met on their journey, then prepare tools and food there to set off on their next voyage.
Additionally, 'Kibo Battle'—where players battle using Kibo alongside other NPCs—offers another activity. In this mini-game, players summon their raised Kibo onto a lane-battle battlefield to destroy the opponent's main base first. Developers are currently making various improvements based on CBT feedback to deliver an even richer experience.
