Monster Hunter Rise passes 20 millions units sold

Capcom’s Monster Hunter Rise has sold over 20m units worldwide, more than five years after the game first launched on Nintendo Switch.

The Japanese publisher, best known for series such as Resident Evil and Street Fighter, announced the milestone on October 6th. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the official Japanese account for Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak thanked players for their support. It also pointed newcomers towards discounts currently running on digital stores.

“Monster Hunter Rise has reached cumulative sales of 20 million units! Thank you to all hunters for your support,” the post read, translated from Japanese. “For those who haven’t played yet, sales are now running on each digital store. Don’t miss this chance to make your hunter debut.”

Capcom shared the news with English-speaking players the same day on the game’s Steam page, where it called the figure a ‘magnificent milestone’. The post came with special artwork from the development team, which Capcom said was filled with dango (a Japanese rice dumpling that features in the game).

How Monster Hunter Rise compares to Capcom’s other hits

Capcom keeps a public list of its Platinum Titles, which are games that have sold more than one million units each. In its latest update, covering sales up to June 30th, Monster Hunter Rise sat third with 19.3m units. That means the game has sold at least 700,000 more copies since then.

Monster Hunter: World remains Capcom’s best-selling single game, with 22.4m units as of June. The Resident Evil 2 remake was second at 19.7m. Monster Hunter Rise’s new total puts it above that June figure, although Capcom has not yet published updated numbers for Resident Evil 2.

Sunbreak, the paid expansion released in June 2022, had sold 11.9m units by the end of June. Capcom lists it separately from the base game, and it ranked tenth on the list.

Steam discounts and player reception

Monster Hunter Rise first launched on Nintendo Switch in March 2021 before arriving on PC in January 2022. It later came to PlayStation and Xbox consoles. The action game sees players hunt large monsters alone or in groups of up to four, crafting new weapons and armour from the materials they collect.

At the time of writing, the base game was 90% off on Steam, down from $39.99 to $3.99. A bundle including Sunbreak was priced at $9.59, while Sunbreak on its own cost $5.99. The promotion was listed as ending within a day.

On Steam, the game holds a ‘Very Positive’ rating from more than 80,500 reviews across all languages, and its recent reviews have the same rating. Not all of the recent feedback has been positive, however. One recent reviewer criticised Rampage, a tower defence-style quest type, for being mandatory to progress through the game.

Capcom will release its financial results for the second quarter of its 2026 fiscal year on October 27th. The company is in a quiet period ahead of that announcement, which runs until October 26th.
