Vanillaware's SRPG Unicorn Overlord earned widespread acclaim for its gorgeous visuals and unique system often referred to as "tactical coding." On September 25, a teaser trailer was released for DAWNGAZER, a new action RPG currently in development at Monochrome Corporation, where Takafumi Noma—the main director of Unicorn Overlord—has moved after leaving Vanillaware.
While serving as director for Unicorn Overlord at Vanillaware, Takafumi Noma spearheaded development on the front lines, also taking on roles as scenario writer, character designer, and programmer. He now leads development on the new title DAWNGAZER as the head and main director of IGNISPHERE Studio, newly established by Monochrome.
According to IGNISPHERE Studio, DAWNGAZER is not simply a standalone new game. It is the first game set within IGNISPHERE, a brand IP universe sharing the same name as the studio. To this end, Monochrome Corporation and IGNISPHERE Studio are collaborating with Good Smile Company, a leading Japanese figure and plastic model manufacturer, to produce IGNISPHERE figures, while also planning to launch light novels through Kadokawa's Fujimi Fantasia Bunko imprint.
Detailed information about DAWNGAZER, which marks the beginning of this universe, has not yet been revealed. The 1-minute and 40-second teaser trailer only shows off the game's visuals and glimpses of its world.
The most eye-catching aspect is undoubtedly the visual style. As studio head Takafumi Noma designed the characters for Unicorn Overlord, DAWNGAZER showcases an art style so similar that at first glance, it could easily be mistaken for a sequel. Regarding the world setting, various races appear, including humans, dwarves, harpies, cat-folk, shrimp-folk, and oni. Judging by character costumes, several classes such as knights, martial artists, samurai, and nuns are expected to appear.
The precise genre details of the game have not yet been disclosed. However, as it is currently introduced as an action RPG, there is a possibility it will be a side-scrolling action RPG.
Meanwhile, in an interview with Dengeki Online regarding the brand IP and world setting of IGNISPHERE, studio head Takafumi Noma explained, "IGNISPHERE is a combination of Ignis, the Latin word for fire, and Sphere, meaning world". He added, "I believe fire is the very first power humanity acquired. While it symbolizes fighting and destruction, it also gives warmth to people and builds civilization." He went on to state that fire will be a crucial keyword in the world he envisions, and that the story will unfold around it.
As the first game in the IGNISPHERE universe, DAWNGAZER is scheduled for release in 2028 on Steam, Nintendo Switch 2, and PS5. According to information released so far, it will support English, Japanese, and Chinese.
