4A Games' new title, 'Metro 2039,' has confirmed a February 4, 2027 release date alongside the reveal of its first console gameplay footage. Notably, the developers announced that ray tracing combined with 60fps will be supported not only on PS5 Pro, but on the standard PS5 as well.

Sony revealed the first console gameplay footage of Metro 2039 during its State of Play broadcast on the 3rd. The video showcased the new protagonist, The Stranger, alongside the ruined surface world of Moscow. The footage opens with the protagonist emerging from underground tunnels onto the thawed surface of ruined Moscow.

Though he was once an elite combatant serving among the Spartans, he is depicted as a man with a dark past who never wanted to return to the Metro he left behind. Robbie Cooke, Head of Brand at 4A Games, introduced him as 'a former Spartan warrior who is as brutal as he is adaptable.' Cooke added that while wearing his signature Spartan armor might make him look like a hero on the surface, the reality is that he is far more dangerous than that.

Cooke explained that the video features a sequence specifically captured to preview Metro 2039's combat and exploration feel, while emphasizing that the core of the game remains a story-driven single-player first-person shooter.

On the technical side, 4A Games' long-standing proprietary '4A Engine' is being used once again for this title. 4A Games was previously recognized as one of the early pioneers to implement 60fps ray tracing on PS5 with 'Metro Exodus: Enhanced Edition' in 2021.

Building upon this accumulated technical expertise, Metro 2039 is being developed to achieve the highest level of graphics in the franchise's history. In particular, both PS5 and PS5 Pro will support ray tracing and 60fps simultaneously through a dedicated Performance Mode.

This title serves as an official sequel celebrating the 15th anniversary of the Metro series, set in 2039—four years after the events of the previous entry, 'Metro Exodus.' The game will be released on February 4, 2027, for PC, PS5, and XSX|S.
