KRAFTON announced on the 17th that it will launch 'BGMI Lite,' a lightweight version of 'Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI),' in India by the end of 2026.

"BGMI Lite continues our commitment to expanding accessibility to one of India's most beloved gaming experiences," KRAFTON stated. "It is the next milestone in the evolution of the BGMI ecosystem, opening doors to a new generation of users." The company added, "As India's gaming community grows, so does our goal to make BGMI more inclusive and accessible."
Specific details were not disclosed. KRAFTON India stated only that information regarding gameplay features would be revealed closer to the launch date. The announcement did not include a specific release date, supported device specifications, whether the game will link with existing BGMI accounts and data, or if it will be distributed as a separate app.
Typically, a 'Lite' version refers to a build optimized for low-end devices and limited network environments by reducing file size and graphical processing requirements. In this announcement, KRAFTON India used the terms 'accessibility' and 'inclusivity' rather than explicitly mentioning support for low-end devices.
BGMI was launched in India in July 2021. It was removed from local app markets by the Indian government in July 2022 but resumed service in May 2023, approximately 10 months later. In its Q1 2026 earnings call, KRAFTON reported that cumulative downloads of BGMI had surpassed 260 million, with the number of paying users increasing by 17% compared to the same period the previous year.
This is not KRAFTON's first attempt at a 'Lite' version. The low-spec PC version, 'PUBG Lite,' launched in Southeast Asia in 2019 but ended service on April 29, 2021. On the mobile front, 'PUBG Mobile Lite,' serviced by Tencent, was released in July 2019 and was shut down in India in September 2020 following the ban on 'PUBG Mobile'.
