Katsuhiro Otomo, the director famous for 'Akira,' has established a new studio called 'Obal Gear Animation Studio' and begun production on a new project.
Oval Gear Animation Studio launched its official website today (the 11th) and posted a recruitment notice for staff to join its animation production team. Led by Director Otomo, the studio is currently developing a new project and is hiring for various roles, including in-between animators, animation checkers, and production staff. While details about the new project have not yet been disclosed, the recruitment notice mentions the 'planning and production of a feature-length theatrical animation.' Furthermore, the use of a key visual similar to 'Orbital Era,' the sci-fi animation Director Otomo announced in 2019, suggests the project will be a feature-length sci-fi film.
Director Katsuhiro Otomo is considered a master of Japanese sci-fi manga and animation. Since debuting as a manga artist in 1973, he won the Japan SF Grand Prize in 1983 for 'Domu,' which he began serializing in 1980. He also directed the animated adaptation of his 1982 series 'AKIRA,' which influenced countless artists and works with its overwhelming animation quality and dynamic direction. Notably, the scene where the protagonist slides his motorcycle to a stop remains a frequently referenced homage in modern media.
After continuing his work with projects like 'Steamboy' and the live-action 'Mushishi' film, Director Otomo announced in 2019 that he would produce a space-themed theatrical sci-fi animation titled 'Orbital Era' in collaboration with Sunrise (now Bandai Namco Filmworks), though little news followed. However, with the establishment of this new studio and the recruitment of staff for a new project, it appears he is returning to active production.
Further information regarding the new project at Oval Gear Animation Studio will be updated on the official website in the future.
